last friday i went to the dentist as my gums were swollen on the right side of my face. they gave metronidazole to try combat it, these didnt work. so i went back and i was given a high dosage of amoxicillin and some tablets to take wif the metronidazole, but the metronidazole give me a headche all day long, i told the dentist this and he recomended i stop takin it, so now im just on amoxicillin but the infection is starting to spread to the other side of my face. i have been dentist the past 3 days and nothing seems to be working, i have had this infection for 6 days, and in that time i have not a decent nights sleep or a decent meal as i cannot open my mouth properly. if the medicine doesnt work what would be the next course of action? its really stressing me out and i also have a heart murmur, which i believe has been brought on by stress, the dentist just keeps giving me drugs to take, but i want action, its sheer agony

This should help. Get a bottle of HYDROGEN PEROXIDE (this was recommended by my dentist and I have used it many many years for gum soreness and tenderness.) Use it as a mouth wash and brush with a soft tooth brush with it (in your case every hour or so). It kills pain and will bubble the infection out of your gums. After brushing, just hold it in your mouth, to let it work then spit it out, try to avoid rinsing till you have to. It will work longer this way.
It is at the drug store usually on the lower shelves beside rubbing alcohol. It is about $1.00 per quart.
Do it right away it will start to kill the pain the first time you use it.
I would suggest taking IBUPROFEN for the inflammation and swelling, and pain, the combination of these two should help enormously.
Good Luck. PS, it sounds like you are allergic to the meds.

It sounds to me like you have gum disease really bad. You can stay on the amoxicellion, espicially if you have a heart murmer! If you don't and they go in and try to remove the infection you could end up dead. So stay on the medicine that they have given you. Once you have been on the meds for about two weeks they will have to go under your gums (because this is where there is so much bacteria has grown and it needs to be removed.) You must take proper care of your mouth and you can all use special care to make sure it They will keep you on antibotics for quite some time, but it sure beats dying from infection in your heart. Take care of your teeth, they are a very vital part of your health around. Love, Gig

I think your saying you have an abscess, the only thing which will take away the pain is antibiotics, you could ask your dentist to drain the tooth which will relieve the sensation of pressure building up and might ease the pain slightly, then dress it with an anti inflammatory cream but these are temporary fixes and wouldn't last, if it is your gums that are inflamed you should visit the hygienist and ask them to numb you up then give you a scaling and irrigate your gums with corsodyl mouthwash which is made for people with gum problems.

Antibiotics work over the course of 10 days. That usually reduce swelling. If its an abscess, then we are looking at an incision and drainage procedure, however, if the swelling doesnt go down, the anesthesia will not work that well. If its tooth related, then we are looking at root canals or extractions.

Take some warm water and put some sea salt or regular salt in about 1/2 cup water and 1 tsp of salt. Make sure the salt is dissolved completely and gargle 3 to 4 times a day...it should go down in no time. It works!

Hello,
As others have stated: Probably Gum Disease.
A few things: Metronidazole is a good medication. It is prescribed to alcoholics to help them quit drinking. If one drinks while on it they will get very sick, so they tend to stop drinking. It does have a lot of side affects, but we prescribe it for patients with severe periodontal disease.
Do not use Hydrogen Peroxide unless it is diluted with water 1/2 and 1/2, anything stronger will "burn" your gum tissue. Ouch.
Ibuprofen is awesome as an anti-inflamatory.
My suggestion to try: Chlorahexidine. It is a rinse that we prescribe our patients when Dr. Joe is treating them for Periodontal treatment and/or placing a Dental Implants. It is a rinse that you can not have anything to drink or eat for about 30 minutes afterwards, or it will taste BAD.
You need to have a thorough exam to check for periodontal disease, it does not get better or go away without treatment.
Good luck

Perhaps you should have put up with the headache as the dentist prescribed the best drug for you but you didn't want to take it.

Have you tried swishing your mouth out with anti-septic mouthwash or warm salt water?
