I have been off effexor xr for a whole week. Have gradually wheened down, had been on it for 7 months ranging (with Dr supervision) from 37.5mg a day to 150mg. I am seeing a clin psych and it is really helping me. My weight has increased 15kg, and am fed up with the catch 22 depression, back pain, weight gain increased back pain, low self esteem, depression. I've opted to come off and try some natural remedies with continued psych sessions. I am experiencing nausea, head spin current things, body shakes, tremors, anxiety, nervousness, sleeplessness. I also feel agitated and quite uneasy? All horrid side effects going on it too! How long do the withdrawals take to go away completey? The brain tremor electric current things are awful...really don't want to go on again, but horrid coming off too. Thanks :)

Been so bad - vomiting, losing balance, dropping things, crying...can't concentrate takes ages to type and correct this! Now prescribed valium to help me through for two weeks? Hoping I won't have withdrawals from that too?

Every individual is different, so I can't tell you how long your side-effects will continue. One reason it may be difficult is that the half-life of Effexor XR is longer than just Effexor. Your symptoms are normal for someone coming off any of the SSRI type antidepressants. It isn't fun, but you have taken the care to slowly reduce your dosage--so you are most of the way there!

Plenty of good advice has already been said, take care of yourself, get plenty of rest, drink lots of water, etc.

And it is a good thing that you are seeing a doctor. If you get really concerned, call their office.

As for getting off Valium, it is difficult but generally the withdrawal symptoms are less physical and more mental. If your doctor thinks you need them, take them, it will take the edge off.

Good luck and congratulations!

Yea, the same thing happened to me. I actually went cold turkey after taking it for about 3 months as it wasnt effectively working (yes i know silly to just stop). Very anxious, nauseous, agitated and the occaiaional shakes. This stuff basically alters the way your brain works chemically. When you stop taking the drug... it alters again ( not using all the way back tho... or that would defeat the purpose of taking it in the first place). I think I felt like this for maybe two weeks?

It could be anywhere from 10 days to a month. You HAVE to take care of yourself. Eat right, drink lots of water, and get some rest and it won't last as long. Plus, you were only on it for 7 months so it won't be as bad. I was on it for 3 years. Trust me it's better to get off of it now. :)

I believe this is one of the drugs involved in court litigation because of the serious side effects.
