I'll choke/cough one up every now and again an squish it between my fingers and they smell awfull!

Almost like sh*t!

can anyone tell me what they are and why they're there? I used to smoke but havent for about 8 months?

They're tonsil stones (tonsilloliths). They are calcified deposits of bacteria, food debris and mucous (from post-nasal drip) that collect in the pockets of your tonsils. They get pretty rancid as the debris rots. You can physically remove them yourself. Try loosening (and deodorizing) by gargling with an antibacterial mouth wash. You will have to do this regularly. The problem just doesn't go away unless you choose more drastic measures like surgery (either to smooth the pockets so they can't collect stuff, or remove your tonsils).

It sounds like the spots a person gets with strep.

Use a good anti bacterial mouth wash every day or use Hydrogen peroxide. They will help eliminate the problem.
The peroxide especially.

Not a mouth wash but an ANTI BACTERIAL MOUTH WASH.
