Older versions of office are a lot cheaper, you could try ebay'ing or amazon second hand'ing for Office oldies.
2000 on amazon sales is about £49, heres an example:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B00004U7G1/ref=dp_olp_2/026-3122538-2147621?ie=UTF8&qid=1175598052&sr=8-3
Open office is good, free and is getting better every day, but takes a bit of getting used to (but well worth the time)
Within Windows, notepad is basic but simple, wordpad is OK for basic work but not good enough for anything else.
I would look for Office 2003, Office 2000 or Office XP on ebay or maybe ask around mates that may have an old copy.

You could buy Works. Its a less powerfull version but you get it for cheaper to.
Or you could go to TESCO, they are selling word program that has a VERY similar lay out. The same product also includes a program similar to Excel. And what is great is, you can use Microsoft word at school, then bring the file back and use it on the Tesco word processor, because they can read the same file format.
And whats even beter its only £20!!! So you could buy other programs i.e. tescos version of power point for cheap as chip prices.

I do not like Microsoft Word (OFFICE). I got a tip from a friend to use OPENOFFICE. It is free, about 95mb and is absolutely superb! It is virtually the same as OFFICE and COREL WORDPERFECT. The PowerPoint works well, the document side is superb. You would be happy with it. It is free and you can get updates free whenever you need it.

you could use the wordpad which is installed with xp.its not as full functioning as word but ok for letters and basic stuff.if you buy vista upgrade it comes with word installed.think vista is only 150 pounds so you get the new operating system and word.
