Long before the advent of Christianity the ancient world had almost completely abandoned polytheism in favor of a single, monotheistic Deity who was worshipped through initiations based on the course of the sun through the heavens. Christianity fulfilled the paradigm of the ancient Mysteries (and was actually itself a Mystery religion), and met most (if not all) of the expectations of ancient paganism. The truth is, the Greco-Roman world was essentially Christian centuries before the birth of Christ. The Cybele, for example, had already predicted that the Logos would be incarnate in matter, and that the numerical value of his name would add up to 888 (as in Jesus Christ).
Of course, ancient Christianity did not practice forced conversions. Even when Julian the Apostate tried to force the Romans back into pre-Christian paganism his efforts failed miserably - nobody showed up for the feasts. And Constantine had far less of an impact of Christianity than most people assume. While he did proclaim freedom of religion and offered special privelages to Christian Churches, all of the doctrines expressed at the Nicene Council were drawn from pre-existing canons, as any student of canon law will immediately recognize.

The biggest success, and by some accounts the biggest disaster, for Christianity...
The Emperor changed his mind.
When Constantine became a Christian, Christianity went "Official" and "State" becoming the favoured religion of the Roman Empire.
And of course, being associated with the structure of power, it started to be the necessary colouring to be "in" with government and state. The fashion, for those who would adopt the latest fashion, or the pronouncement of the powerful, for those who would go with "the way the wind blows".
Many more Christians, then, but much more doubt about how many were convinced, and how many were just changing clothes to suit the times.
