(m)
1)STORAGE CAPACITY:-
VCD-maximum capacity is 700MB(enough for aprox.60-70min of video)
DVD-maximum cap. is 18GB(aprox 9hours of video)
2)COMPRESSION METHOD:-since almost all digital video formats are compressed in one form or the other, these 2 are also compressed but with different methods which then make the 2 signals incompatible with one another.
VCD-uses MPEG1 compression scheme
DVD-uses MPEG2 compression scheme(which is superior and more effective than MPEG1)
3)PIXEL COUNT:-the higher the pixel count, the better the resolution.
VCD-uses 352x288 pixels(PAL).This correspond to VHS quality.
DVD-uses 720x576 pixels(PAL).This corresponds to full broadcast quality.
4)HORIZONTAL TV LINES OF RESOLUTION:-the rule here also is the more the lines the sharper the image quality.
VCD-approx. 240 lines(VHS quality)
DVD-approx.500 lines(PAL broadcast quality)
5)VIDEO BITRATE:-probably the most important and accurate indices of measuring the quality of digital video image quality. This is because 2 video formats can share the same amount of pixel count and lines of resolution but still differ considerably in bitrates,ex.miniDV has the same pixel count and lines as DVD but has over 2.5 times the bitrate. This is measured in bits per second(kilobits or Megabit/sec).
VCD-uses 1.15 Mbits/sec(for video signal only.Audio not included)
DVD-uses maximum 9.8 Mbits/sec.Most of the hollywood movies u see on DVD are recorded with bitrates between 4-7.5 Mbits/s to save recording space on the disc and the picture quality still look very good.
6)AUDIO QUALITY:-here DVD is also way superior and more flexible.
VCD-2 channel of 44.1khz sample rate audio(Audio CD quality).Theoretically multi channel Dolby surround sound is possible but never done in practice.
DVD-multi channel audio of up to 192khz sample rate quality possible.U name it,Dolby surround pro logic, dolby digital AC3(5.1),MPEG2(5.1),DTS,2 channel Dolby etc.
MENUE-here also are differences
VCD-simple and basic menue which includes access to each video chapters and very little else.
DVD-the menu here is far more complex and versatile.Incorporations of 3D animations and graphic images are very possible.
MISCELLANEOUS-dvd provides multiple video tracks for multiple video angles at the press of the button, multiple audio tracks for multi lingual soundtracks.VCD has none of these.
Some of u may dispute this, but it is technically true that the picture quality of a optimally recorded VHS videotape is superior to the image quality of VCD.This is due to the fact that VCD is a very highly compressed digital format and is consequently saddled with compression artefacts that appears in the images from time to time as objects move about in the picture or by camera movements(motion artefacts).
VHS on the other hand being an analog video format knows no such artefacts and can reproduce moving images more smoothly without any motion artefacts whatsoever.
Also because it is an analog format,it relies heavily on quality of tape material, the quality of recording VTR and the quality of material source(ex.master tape).
So just forget naija recorded tapes as a means of reference 'cos firstly, the tape quality are generally bad, recording VTRs are even worse and the material source are of dubious quality. The end results are the qualities we see all the time.

video compact disc-VCD digital versatile disc-DVD actually speaking, dvds are better than vcds. the difference is that dvds have a large storage capacity than vcds. like for example, take the film pirates of the caribbean 2. this is almost a 3 and a half hour film. a dvd can store this whole film in one cd, whereas vcd takes 2-3 cds to store this film. [by the way, thanks for the 2 points]

VCD stands for 'Video Compact Disc' and basically it is a CD that contains moving pictures and sound. If you're familiar with regular audio/music CDs, then you will know what a VCD looks like. A VCD has the capacity to hold up to 74/80 minutes on 650MB/700MB CDs respectively of full-motion video along with quality stereo sound. VCDs use a compression standard called MPEG to store the video and audio. A VCD can be played on almost all standalone DVD Players and of course on all computers with a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive with the help of a software based decoder / player. It is also possible to use menus and chapters, similiar to DVDs, on a VCD and also simple photo album/slide shows with background audio. The quality of a very good VCD is about the same as a VHS tape based movie but VCD is usually a bit more blurry.
digital versatile disc or digital video disc, a type of optical disk technology similar to the CD-ROM. A DVD holds a minimum of 4.7GB of data, enough for a full-length movie. DVDs are commonly used as a medium for digital representation of movies and other multimedia presentations that combine sound with graphics.
The DVD specification supports disks with capacities of from 4.7GB to 17GB and access rates of 600KBps to 1.3 MBps. One of the best features of DVD drives is that they are backward-compatible with CD-ROMs, meaning they can play old CD-ROMs, CD-I disks, and video CDs, as well as new DVD-ROMs. Newer DVD players can also read CD-R disks.
DVD uses MPEG-2 to compress video data.

Main difference between vcd and dvd is data storage capacity. vcd has less data storage capacity i.e. about 700MB where as in dvd the data storage capacity is about 7GB and more. vcd can be open from any player but dvd can be open with dvd / combo player.that's all.

view compact disc and digital versatile disc.. digital better technology.. stores more miniscule recordings which mean more space higher resolution hence higher quality of data.
VCD is a normal cd so to say that is used as a video media taht is playable in almost any player.
DVD.. more advanced VCD

VCD uses MPEG-1 video (at about 1.5 Mbits/s) and MPEG audio. It is usually recorded on a CD-R.
DVD uses MPEG-2 video (about about 6-8 Mbits/s) and Dolby Digital audio. It is recorded in DVD-Rs
