Seriously, I am not here to ridicule or belittle you're religion in anyway.. but I do find alot of the bible hard to swallow, are these events actually meant to have happened or are they metaphores? they explain so little and are dated in this day and age, do you think if the bible was released today people would actually believe it or file it away next to the latest harry potter novel?

Well if were released today, you'd like to believe that evolution would be recognized as fact, and that the sheer mention of Creationism would be mocked and ridiculed. But now since we have 2,000 years of believe God made us and the universe no more than 13,000 years ago, flooded the earth, Noah fit millions of animals on a boat including dinosaurs (?), God helped men win war after war, virgin birth, talking snakes, low level magic tricks, resurrections, etc. You know what, even in this reality, I'm suprised it's the believers that are the majority.

But guarnatee it would be a movie by this summer.

I appreciate the question...well said and unbiased.

It's a little difficult to answer because the bible isn't exactly a "book" in the traditional sense, in that it was not written and released all at once. It is a collection of scriptures and writings which were preserved and taught by the early Christian church. In addition, the scriptures were largely communicated verbally rather than in written form, as copies would have had to be hand-written. The church would have had a copy, but the average Christian wouldn't have had his own "bible" to carry around.

Even so, as a Christian, I think that people would react in much the same way they reacted in Christ's day....with violence and disbelief. Remember that neither Christ nor his disciples were received with open arms by everyone they came in contact with. They were continuously persecuted for their teachings, beaten, jailed, and eventually put to death. In our day and age, perhaps the physical abuse would be less prevalent, but I feel they would most certainly be ridiculed for their teaching. Even now in this forum, there are a substantial number of people who do nothing but ridicule and mock Christians for their believe in God.

To answer the second part of your question, the bible is considered to be a historical record of the times in which it was written. There are many secular researchers who have confirmed through separate sources that the bible's historical accounts are very accurate. Naturally, there are some events which cannot be confirmed, but those which can lend support to the bible as a credible source.

I don't feel that the bible is dated or irrelevent at all. The bible is essentially a blueprint for understanding God and for dealing with people. The bible is, in fact, all about people....how God views us and how we are to act toward God and each other. The events of the bible are only important in how they impact the lives of the people involved....revealing things about their character and the nature of God. It's true that the world in which Christ and the other biblical prophets lived looks very different from the world we live in today. However, the nature of people has not changed in thousands of years. Focus on the bible from that perspective and I think you'll find that it is incredibly relevent for this day and age.

if the bible was released today...
it would be in a form that would be appeal to people
& it would be addressed to the current generation...
(much as the letters of the new testament were written to a specific person or group of persons)

the reaction? would be much the same way as when it was first released...

(if you are to look at the bible--at least the new testament bible, the first 5 books are actual eye-wtiness accounts or narratives of actual events as the writers saw it happen, not unlike the news you can read today, the bulk are letters of instructions to specific people--we still make those too & the last book is a book of prohesy... if those prophesies come to pass then that would totally change things)

i would love to answer your question more in depth, so email me if you are interested in specific questions and answers...

i think it's important to remember that the bible didn't just come out at a book store one day...it took years to write and compile. These things really did all happen. it's your choice whether or not to believe the miracles and what not, but as for the historicity of it all..it's all accurate. A man named...something Sir Ramsey tried to disprove the book of Luke by testing EVERY SINGLE detail he could and ended up becoming a believer....i reccomend the book "the case for christ" by lee strobel. he was an athiest reporter who decided to set out investigating the claims made about Christ and became a Christian in the end...but he talks about the other scientific possibilites...written AS an athiest..good book.

If the bible was released today i think people would be confused because the bible really is a history book. it's the most comprehensive and accurate history book we have for israel...i really encourage you to investigate the historicity of it all...

Probably the same as how too many treat the Book of Mormon.
