It simply demands newer hardware to run it with no problems. More memory will be required (1 Gb is recommended) and for each Vista new feature you must have a hardware that supports it.
I would recommend to wait until the first service pack will be released (and this will happen pretty soon).
Vista is inspired by Mac OS, and if you don't believe it just search for related videos on the internet. It's nothing wrong with inspiring after what others have done but from my point of view 450$ for an operating system with everything on it is quite much.
If Apple decides now that they will enter the pc market with their new operating system I think they will have all the advantages to win!

I recommend waiting for at least until the end of the year before anyone upgrades their computer to Windows Vista. From the reviews Windows Vista is more secured than Windows XP in terms of security and better multimedia experience. At the moment, Windows Vista is not compatible with many software that is currently running on Windows XP and there are many hardware issues that many companies are trying to get their product files to work with Vista. Until all this is taken care of, there is no sense of upgrading until all hardware and software is fully compliant and functional in Windows Vista.

honestly, I was FAITHFUL to pc for many years. But, I have to say Vista is a facelift to XP. For performance, it feels slower then XP. I have purchased a new laptop with vista and ended up putting a dual boot with xp. I use XP more, Plus, Alot of software is not usable with Vista. At times i think I should have picked up an Apple. Yes, I said it.

Anecdotal evidence suggests Vista still has some bugs, But if you've already bought it you may as well install it and wait for the fixes.
