The defacto standard is Photoshop. The current version is Photoshop CS2 and there is Photoshop Elements which has many of the same features for much cheaper.
Mac's Aperture program is very popular also.
PaintShop Pro is a distant third, I would say.
GIMP is free on the internet, and is a powerful editing tool. A bit less friendly and lacking in features than the others mentioned above, but the price is right.
Photoshop and the others do have quite a learning curve involved. It does take some time to learn how to use it effectively. There is a reason that those composites cost so much. :) But it is learnable.

TaraC if u r looking for free software under GNU license then try GIMP. It's not only the best in its class but also has many advance functions and brushes and filters for retouching ur cool fotos.

OK. Picasa doesn't make brushing, but its amazing in it's intuitiveness, power and simplicity.

iphoto is great! you can edit, retouch, airbrush, crop, and even get rid of the red eyes! I use iphoto. you can even creat slideshows! for more stuff about the program, go to www.apple.com, click on hardware, and type in iphoto
