Is there a plan I can help him put together to help him achieve his goal? Are there things we can start doing now to prepare him to be ready to qualify?

First make sure his math skills are high, trust me math is very important to a sniper. Second make sure he stays in school and gets a good education. Eats healthy and stays physicaly active. Next teach him how to shoot with a remingtion 700 .308 rifle with a decent scope. Go to your military surplus store and get the fm on Army sniper operations. You can also start by joining a jrotc, civil air patrol etc to prepare for the military. Survival skills and field craft are excelent things to know to. Hope this helps! ......Shadow Stalker.

I'd agree with everybody else on here who said get him involved in the outdoors, get him familiar with shooting some weapons, etc... Also, I saw a pretty good documentary on the Discovery Channel about the Army sniper school, you might want to show him that to give him an idea of what he'd be doing.

Really though, being a sniper is a lot more boring then people think it is. You don't see a lot of action, and if you do you're watching it from behind your scope, you're not in it. Maybe talk to him about being an MP or joining the FBI as an agent if he's looking for a little more action in the government...

Take him to the outdoors, make him run everyday at least 1.5miles, take him to swimming, rock climbing and buy him a BB gun. Im 13 and I want to be a USMC tanker. Oh yea when he is 15 or 16 let him do at least 75 push ups, 50 sit ups, run 3 miles in 15 mins and run 1.5miles carrying 50 pounds he wont have much trouble in boot camp then.

ok well the military sniper, marine, navy, army, they all have one thing in common, skills. if you dont have fire arms get a cheap 22 rifle. doesnt ahve much kick to it so its not gonna break his sholder but willteach him how to aim and relax and become very comfortable around weapons. i myself shot first at aobut 8-10. if he is trying to be a sniper and goes in never have fired a weapon they will make him a sharpshooter because sniper school would be way to hard. they are tested physicaly, mentaly such as memory and sleep dep., and emotionaly when they go thorugh POW camp and what not. he should be strong and able to sit still for long periods of time paitiantly. there are 4 levels of snipers, sharpshooter who is part of a company (144 ppl) usues a hunting rifle with a low power scope and they stay back in a more secure location and take usualy 4 shots to hit a target. they dont hunt their targets and they rarly change position untill they move up. then there is the sharpshooter that has an M16 with a scope and they move up into combat with the company and give them the extra edge in combat. then there is the sniper that can hunt its targets and takes one shot for one kill. this is the professional sniper. they are in the green berets and move out in teams of 2, sniper and spotter. the reason for the spotter is to set the shot up for the sniper by telling him where to shoot. a team is more apt to kill becasue they share the responsibility for hte kill and it doesnt way as much on thier mind. their missiontake about 1 to 3 weeks and they usualy get little sleep and do alot of sitting and watching. then there is the crem de la crem of snipers, the counter sniper. capable of hunting down enemy snipers incomabt and out, accurate to 1.5 miles away. takes one shot moves constanly, wiats for wind or a distraction before moving so they are less noticable and usualy move out alone. all these are based on how long you have been a sniper and what your rifle scores are in basic training before you even beomce a sniper. so if he does good then he will be a level 3 sniepr or so. but he has to become a green beret and pass sniper school where only about 1/3 of the ppl make it before he can be a level 3 or 4 siper. the other two are skills with rifle and him saying this is what i want to do. sorry this was long but if that doesnt help you or you want more information let me know.

Go out in the woods. Find a big bush. Tell him that he can't leave the bush for three days, even to do his business. Give him three MREs and tell him everything has to be packed out. Also he can't make a noise or build a fire. The boredom will probably do him in. In the land of snipers, it's very common to be out for 5 or more days in the middle of nowhere to make just one shot. During Gulf War 1, one guy was sent in to watch a major road for three days (hence the excercise I gave was based on a real event).

If he wants more action, he should be a rifleman instead.

lol, I would guess that your son would grow out of that dream by the time he can even join the military. If not, make sure he has good eyes no contacts, glasses. If your sight is bad it don't matter how perfect you are in other aspects. There's nothing you can do to prepare, all it is, is the gun and you. It's one of those things where practice makes perfect.

first, make sure he joins the Marine Corps- they have the best scout snipers in the military. Have him join ROTC at his school, and enroll him in marksmanship classes. I would suggest doing so, so he can be ready when he joins boot camp. But they have PMI's (Primary marksmanship instructors) on the rifle range in boot camp, so I am sure he will do fine. And thank you for raising a son who wants to do something great with his life- its nice to know that a 13 year old has more compassion for our country and wants to serve his country than most 30 year olds

take him to a recruiter in the army or marines and have them talk to him and they can give out ideas. School is number one keep your grades up, keep a clean record, do your best at everything you do and keep your nose clean. A sniper is one of the top fields and you have to be on top to get there. Also you may want to take up fire arm classes and learn to respect the weapon of choice. Good luck to the soldier of the future

If you are really asking for a response from an ex-military person I can tell you that the only preparation for a military sniper is that he must be able be able to kill the people his orders tell him to kill and feel no remorse. Since that is basically impossible that person must be the type of person who wants or is willing to admit that just maybe somebody else knows something they are not ever going to be advised of and be able to not only accept that but live with it.

It is not normal , not is it healthy for a 13 year old to start harboring dreams of killing people as an occupation, even if it is for the military. What if this boy were to want to start practicing in the neighborhood, first with small animals, and graduating to people? If this were my kid, I would have a strong talk with him about morality first, because there is too much bloodshed in the city streets already from people who loves to kill, for the sake the thrill of it.
