stay as clear of them on the road as possible.
even if it means pulling off to the side to allow others to pass you....do what you must because that is extremely dangerous.

Just be thankful you're still alive. I've been on a highway where large pieces of wood were flying off a truck. People can and have been killed because of flying objects from trucks. There should be laws requiring trucking companies to cover their cargo. It's as simple as getting a canvas cover or tie things down. We have known about extended back bumpers on trucks to keep cars from sliding under a semi in an accident that other countries have but we can't even get laws passed in the US to make trucking companies do that.
If you feel that a truck has dangerous cargo flying off, get the license plate number and report it to the police. Someone could get killed if a large object goes through someone's window.

I would write down the license plate number and call the police/sheriff/highway patrol and report it. I believe when trucks are carrying loads such as this they are suppose to cover the load so it doesn't shoot out breaking windshields. That is very dangerous. Then I would get the police report and file a claim with my insurance company. Good luck and God bless****

Get a company name and call them, but you have to be able to prove that the rock was kicked up by their truck. I drive the freeways everyday on my way to work and I have NEVER seen a sign on a truck that says they are not responsible for broken windshields. I have only had a rock crack my windshield once and I couldn't prove what car kicked it up (On the jammed up freeway in Seattle) so I just had my insurance cover it. If you have decent insurance they won't raise your rates for this.

You can get the trucks licence number and report them but this is just one of the risks you take when driving and that is why we have insurance. I don't believe than any of those people do this deliberately that is why it is called an accident. But I do agree it is aggravating not to mention the annoyance of having to book a day to have the windshield changed and paying the deductable.

Back off as you are driving too close ! There is always the possibility of loose gravel and dirt with dump trucks. One should know that. If you are a good distance behind, any stones falling off will hit the road and bounce before coming near your vehicle.

Have your insurance cover the repair. It's not very expensive.
Most trucks have a sign saying "Stay back 300 feet. Not responsible for broken windshields."

I heard of this before, my friend got the number to the owner of the truck, and basically it came down to you shouldn't of been following so close. sad, I know. But at least windshields aren't as expensive to replace like your quarter panels or your life. :-)

get the license plate, call the police if you're in town, or the highway patrol if you're on the highway (WHEN IT HAPPENS) ,and get a report done, then make a claim to your insurance company.

There isn't much that you can do. The police could even give you a ticket for following too close.
