I've noticed gum recession over the past year... since then I've been very careful with brushing slowly and softly with an extra soft brush and floss daily.. my dentists say I do not have gum disease...I do have some questions to prevent further recession

1. Will Sonicare cause recession? Or can I get away with careful brushing with a soft brush? I realize Sonicare is probably the best cleaning tool but am scared about being too hard on the gums

2. Will Invisalign cause recession? I have a minor case my teeth moving due to not wearing a retainer. I don't need to get Invisalign but may do it for cosmetic reasons. However, if the moving of my teeth could promote future recession - I'll think twice

3. Should I use mouthwash and if so - what's the best kind to prevent recession? A non-alcoholic, natural brand like Tom's?

4. I floss daily but am afraid to go down the side of the tooth beneath the gums because I feel this will cause future recession. What's the deal?

thx!!!

I also have receeding gums and no gum disease and I had surgery for my receeding gums. Here are my answers:
1. I was using an extra soft brush also and I switched to one of those inexpensive Crest electric toothbrushes and I have not had any recession since.

2.It is possible that braces and invisalign can cause recession. They thin gums as they straighten teeth. the dentist suggested that my braces that I wore as a preteen were the cause of my recession.

3. I use Act mouthwash.

4. I floss normally with thin dental floss.

Hope that helped!

1.SONICARE WILL NEVER CAUSE RECESSION
2.INVISALIGN WILL NOT CAUSE RECESSION.
3.A MOUTHWASH WILL ALSO NOT CAUSE GUM RECESSION. USING ONE W/O ALCOHOL WOULD BE WISE.
4.FLOSSING IS GOOD TO DO, BUT USING IT TOO AGGRESIVELY MAY CAUSE TRAUMA TO THE GUMS. A BETTER METHOD T CLEAN BETWEEN YOUR TEETH IS TO USE A PROXABRUSH OR TO IRRIGATE ALL BY THE GUMLINE AND BETWEEN TEETH. THE WATERPIK SHOULD BE SET A THE GETLEST SETTING AT FIRSTAND GRADUALLY INCREASED IN THE FOLLOWING WEEKS.
