In boxing im a southpaw, in martial arts im orthadox, so if i get in a street fight i usually stand orthadox, and fight southpaw, i hear southpaws throw opponents off, because there opposite, but i stand orthadox and fight southpaw A LOT im trying to switch to southpaw it feels right, but im used to orthadox(because of my left foot in martial arts) any advice?.... i also hear i have a great advantage as a southpaw, and if they find a way around my southpaw stance i should trick them by standing in my orthadox stance (original) but still fight southpaw, that really threw my friend off

It really depends on your skill, not your stance. Your still wide open for a punch regardless. Thats a myth.

Southpaws can be difficult opponents because their stance is difficult to defend and attack. Since they are in the minority, at early levels, it's hard to train for them. Also, it is hard to make a good contact punch when both guys are holding the same arm out, i.e. my right arm is extended and your left arm is also. Any decent fighter should be able to use either stance though, it is always good to be able to switch up in the middle of a fight and throw your opponent off stride for a bit. But as for using an orthodox stance, and throwing southpaw, i'd imagine that would make it difficult to really get any power behind your punches, in martial arts i guess it would make more sense, but in boxing, you can't use your legs, soo i'm not sure how that would help.

Everybody hates southpaws for all types of reasons. Due to the stance and lead foot being different, orthodox fighters are more liable for trip ups and headbutt collisions. Also a southpaws jab and back hand is opposite than a orthodox fighter, so the person who is orthodox might sometimes forget how to block incoming punches which can be a great advantage for southpaws. So if southpaw is the choice you want to try go for it....

It`s funny but I just asked a question that is relevant to yours. Essentially, in boxing you need to have the appropriate angles to throw your punch combinations effectively. If you watch Gatti vs. Mayweather, there were times in the fight where Gatti was basically standing in a position after mayweather would throw his right hand where he could not hit mayweather. Mayweather was basically standing beside gatti facing him while gatti was facing straight forward, facing nothing. Mayweather`s ability to step off to Gatti`s left gave him an advantage in throwing his left hook. Southpaws who can do the same to right handers effectively, that is, those who can step off to their opponents left or jab hand have an advantage in the same sort of manner; they can trows hooks and straights at will without having to worry about being countered. Pernell whitaker could actually get behind fighters completely because he was so fast. this is frustrating for people that want to square up and fight because there is nothing ever in front of them. The fact that southpaws do this all the time when fighting right handers and that they usually develop an expertise at this while right handers don`t get much time to practice this sort of stuff often gives left handers the advantage. At the end of the day this is why people don`t like to fight left-handers. Thanks for the question and good luck with everything.

If your conventional and fighting a south paw every time he steps to his right your out of position to throw your right hand, it throws a conventional fighter off balance because he's always resetting to throw the punch and rarely getting it off before the south paw lands his own straight left.
