My sister cut my hair for years, but she's moved away and I'm now going to a fairly upscale salon (at least for my small town). The person cutting my hair is the owner and she charges $40 for a cut and style. How much should I tip her? Do I tip her more if I decide to get color or a perm? Is it based on the amount I'm spending? I would really appreciate an overview, I haven't gone to a hair salon in over 20 years - yikes! Help!

I tip based on what service I get: &5.00 for a hair cut, $10.00 for a cut & style & $20.00 for a color.

Your getting a cut and style for $40?! Your crazy...i a hair stylist and I only charge about $22....and about my price about $5....if your willing to pay that, maybe $10...it should be 15-20% of original bill ....more or less depending on how much you like it...

if i were you, i would do a little bit of research on salons around your town and make sure your getting the best deal :)

I would give her 10 bucks and make it an even 50. She's the owner though, so maybe not. Use your own judgement. 40 bucks is just the point when stylists start to get good. The really good gay boys charge way more than that! 40 is the norm I usually pay here for cut and style.

Wait what happened to the rule that your not supposed to tip the owner of an establishment.? I was always taught that this was bad taste. It seems that when doing so you make the owner feel as tho they aren't doing well enough and need your donation.
And I agree $40 is way too much for me.

Depending on your hair and the hair stylist...If you have easy hair and you are easy to please then $5-$10. If you change your mind and they have to do more work, if you don't get it cut often and/or you are difficult to please 10-20. If that doesn't help do it like you do a waitress..15% for average service and 20%+ if very satisfied. Your money shows how you feel about your service in general.
