There is a difference of opinion depending on the denomination. The older ones (Orthodox, RC, Anglican) say that Jesus redeemed the world by God becoming man and living and dying as one of us. Also that the act of His death and Resurrection were part of the atonement for the sins of the world. We are baptized into the death and Resurrection of Jesus and are therefor "born again". Some groups say that all you have to is just say a prayer for Jesus to come into your heart and accept Him as your personal savior. Those are the "born again" groups that usually turn people off, because they believe that only the "saved" are going to heaven and everyone else is going to hell.

To go a little deeper. Sin is separation from God. We became separated from God and not able to become one with Him on our own. God became one with us to show us the way back to Him. He did this in the person of Jesus. Jesus is our role model and also because Jesus was both man and God he is the glue that puts the broken relationship back together.

Does it really matter what others think?
We all need to find our own answers to what these things mean, and the truth is no matter who you ask, they will all come up with something at least slightly different. Isn't the ability to think for ourselves wonderful?!
