You have to take that passage in it's proper context. Jesus was getting ready to leave his disciples and they would no longer be under his direct protection. He wasn't issuing a command to all Christians. There were a lot of roving thieves around the countryside in those days and Jesus was telling them to be armed against attackers.
Luke 22:35 And he said to them, "When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing."
36 He said to them, "But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one.
If a Christian lives in a high crime neighborhood where there are home invasion buglaries it's smart to own a gun.

Well, to restate it slightly for purposes of clarification, Jesus instructed his disciples of the first century to get swords. Why? When Jesus asked his disciples to get swords, it was not for protection. In fact, it resulted in his stating the principle: “All those who take the sword will perish by the sword.” Matthew 26:51, 52; Luke 22:36-38.
Having weapons, yet not using them, was a powerful way to demonstrate to them that they should not resort to carnal weapons. It is noteworthy that having a weapon at his hand, Peter impetuously used it. Jesus strongly rebuked him for this rash act with the words: “All those who take the sword will perish by the sword.”

thanks for studying the Bible and admonishing the christians here to obey His word. it shows that you possibly desire to be taking Bible training and be called to preach?
luke 22:36-38 gives the reason why Jesus advised them to have need of swords.
that he would be numbered with the transgressors.
and indeed, in the garden of gethsemane, Jesus was betrayed by Judas, and the roman soldiers surrounded them to arrest Jesus.
there was a brief bit of combat where one of the high priests happened to get his ear cut off. but Jesus called for a stop to such activities. then took the time to heal the man's ear. - luke 22:49-51
that situation clearly was an isolated incident.
no where in the Bible does it command all believers to carry swords.
Paul the Apostle speaks of weapons in spiritual terms only. - ephesians 6:10-19
Jesus kept his sword in his mouth. - revelations 19:15

Christ was not commanding all Christians to buy swords, only that the apostles at the time would need to protect themselves. In verse 38, they tell Him that they have 2 swords between them and He tells them that it is enough, end of story, no more swords need to be bought.

This is really very simple. Jesus did not order christians to buy swords as you state...although those were the words he used......Jesus was simply making this point to his followers at that time and in those times, because Jesus was a MARKED MAN and any one who was associated with him was also a marked man........
Before Jesus was a wanted man the people loved him and supported him and his followers openly so when Jesus sent the disciples out among the people Jesus told the disciples to take nothing because they would lack for nothing and the previous verse mentions that very thing.
NOW as he spoke to the disciples was quite a different story because there was now a price on Jesus' head and any of his followers themselves were in jeopardry, guilty by association by hanging out with Jesus. In fact the verses before those you mentioned has Jesus explaining the change in the attitude among the people. John was so full of boasting he said that he would go to prison and even death with Jesus....and Jesus then told him that before the cock crowed (Before the sun came up) John would deny knowing Jesus.
You see before, Jesus' associates were welcomed in the open by the people and the disciples did not need for anything because the people took care and provided for Jesus and ALL his followers; but, now the tide had turned and Jesus was simply telling them the change had come emphasizing that no one would help him or them from now on and therefore he told them.... you must fend for yourselves now with your money and the sack and yes the sword but those items were standard equipment when you had to support yourself totally.
When one went out into the wilderness or from town to town..you had to have money to buy food and a sack(suitcase) to carry your sustenance and shelter etc, and a sword to defend yourself against animals and robbers.
In summary then..Jesus sent them out among the people when he was at the height of his popularity; he was a hero and the people took care of his every need but now Jesus was numbered among the transgressors and sorely hated so the days of getting support were over not only for himself but his followers tooi...Now they had to resort to supporting themselves exactly like everyone else did....
I hope this clear as mud?
It is really so very simple..your a hero everyone will give you whatever you need. When you are a wanted man and a fugitive...you have to carry your own support....no one will help you when you have fallen from grace so to speak...

I do own a sword. It's a recreation of a Viking weapon from around 800 AD.
It's nice and sharp, too. I pity the fool who tries to break into my apartment while I'm here.

Yeah, and I believe they're all supposed to have mastered the intricate art of metal-working as well, because in the New Testament it says that in the end times they're all supposed to beat their swords into plowshares.

Well now, I have my words who are equally sharp at times.
The sword is necessary for times of self defense. Anyone who says self defense is not necessary is a fool.

i do no longer once see God command moses to kill all and sundry in the tribes. None of those verses declaring God commanded moses to kill all the individuals. you're assuming that moses became instructed to attempt this by technique of God, yet really ought to okay be that moses commanded to have all the individuals killed depending off his own perception that God would not choose sin in the community which became presented to him by technique of God. the merely difficulty the bible implies is that God became comfortable with moses moves and orders, and one verse it obviously skill that he's comfortable with moses moves, is at the same time as he says to moses to do to one u . s . (do not bear in mind the call) as you probably did to the different u . s . (back don't comprehend the call) which in that "different" u . s . he killed all the individuals. also at the same time as it includes the canaan, God did not order to kill all of them, yet to force all of them out, and in the adventure that they did not the individuals ought to grow to be difficulty for them. ultimately the first borns of Egypt, does no longer mean they were toddlers, yet extremely would were any age. It became an attack on the pharaoh, first borns were major decrease back then.

Amusing as this is, you are taking the verse out of context. Jesus is clearly speaking only to his disciples, not issuing a general order to christians at large.
