It's true, we're never going to know.

Descartes was good, but was definately too sure of himself, as the above guy said, because all knowledge is still derived empirically (if you agree Aristotle and John Locke anyway) and so could cause distorted notions of existence.

Still, it's much better to generally accept that we probably do exist in order to treat lives seriously. Obviously if we don't believe we really exist we're not going to care about the lives of others, and would have no qualms with going on killings sprees or ending our own lives.

That is an excellent question! Recently at least one respected scientist has speculated that our world could concievable be an ultra advanced computer simulation by an intellect vastly beyond ours.

Rent the movie "The Thirteenth Floor" to get the idea... great movie!
