Marines are a department of the Navy (the men's department I'm told). They are virtually always front-line, landing by land, air and sea.

The Army generally follows after the Marines get there.

The USMC is the United States Marine Corps, they're the first to fight, they're Air Sea and Land, where the Army is just land, the Army is much bigger and has better equipment such as Apache helicopters and other goodies.

The Marines is said to better mainly due to the toughness of bootcamp.

The purpose of the USMC is to project Naval power ashore. Protracted war is the Army's job, after the beach is secure. Not always done that way, however. The first Gulf war is about the best example of correct ground force deployment in recent history. BTW: The USMC is a seperate and equal branch of the Department of the Navy, and not a part of the Navy. We are, however, justiafiably proud of our Naval heritage and roots.

Yes both fight on the field yet they have different means and objectives not to mention resources. Just a small example the Army has more ships then the Navy (did you know). The differences are vast though and can not be explained in a simple answer. For simplicity I guess you could say the Marienes charge more hills, and the Army assumes more security roles here recently; However, they can both do either or depending on the units involved.

Simply stated, Marines are shock troops. The Army is an occupation force. Both are parts of the greatest military to ever inhabit the planet.

Marines tend to want to chew off parts of their own antomies to beat you to death with. Army likes keeping their in tact. Marines are still trying to fit their Square heads in jars, knowing full well a box head cannot at anytime fit into a circular object. Marines will chop your head off and use your neck as a comode. Both branches of service have Bull Dogs. Marines look like those dogs and have dispositions to match. Army that has Bulldogs but don't look like their animals and are well behaved and trained to kill the enemy. Army has a higher IQ and know when to leave them alone. If at anytime you have angered a Marine they will smile at you, do a lot of collateral damage, until you do not exsist anymore. God Bless the USMC and the ARMY...

The Marines usually go in first as a smaller hard hitting force that contains a situation until the larger , more heavily equipped Army can come in. I am sure you know that as the name implies the USMC are a part of the US Navy

The Marines got their name because they were army troops carried on board ships either to fight off pirates or attack other ships. Hence in their "fight song" is the line "...to the shores of Tripoli..." which was considered a pirate haven in the 1700's.
I think they still are under the branch of the US Navy - but I'm not positive on that. In any event, marines are now used as the 'hard core" faction. But it is not true they are ALWAYS first to attack. The US Army is probably used more in first lines of defense and attack because there are more of them. Consequently marines might be used where skill, daring and bravery might carry the day and the army might be used where sheer numbers might carry the day.
The marines go through more rigorous training than army personnel - but in war, all jobs are tough. As an army infantryman you could find yourself in the toughest battle and as a marine in the easiest.
(I was in the army, fortunately, not in a war)

All the answers above me pretty much some it all up, but there is a intangible difference too, during Desert Storm General Norman Schwarzkopf (army) went around visiting his men and asked them "what do you need?" the majority of the answers he got from the army solders was food and sleep.

When he asked the same questions to the Marines, our reply was get us more ammo.
