I LOVE to use Cool Whip on cupcakes or regular cakes because it isn't as sickening sweet as some frostings are!! I also like to take food coloring to my Cool Whip so I can decorate cupcakes or cakes according to the holiday or special occasion!! ;-) I also agree that there are some fro stings that taste very artificial,or it is so sickening sweet that it literally makes you gag!! :-(

I'm going to agree. Go Cool Whip! Love the stuff (but prefer real whipped cream to top pies). But I will say, and I'm not sure what your last question was. I think the reason people were making a fuss over it is because it is light on a cake. You never know until you try, however, and it works even though you wouldn't think it would!
That being said, people that are used to a thicker cream might add something to thicken it - like jello pudding powder and refrigerate before topping- but adding canned frosting (like a few others have said) seems odd to me. Don't know, never tried it. But I don't think the two consistencies would combine well.
Anyway, I'm all for the cool whip thing. I do it all the time. Why waste your time when someone who has perfected it does it for you? You go, girl!!!!!!!!!!

Cool whip and whipped cream are not frostings. Cool Whip is imitation non-dairy whipped cream. I generally think its gross. Whipped cream shouldn't be used as frosting either.
If you are making a cake frost it with real frosting. I've been to parties where people thought they were being "neat" with cool whip on a cake ... its cheap and offensive to look at. Whats the point if you don't use real frosting?

Nothing wrong with cool whip topping at all, it does come frozen and needs defrosting, so on a cake, it should already be soft, however, it will not "set" like a traditional frosting, and could actually wet the cake. You might consider single layer cakes or desserts and just add a dollap of the whipped goodie on top, or mix it in like a fruit medley.

There is a very easy solution to this situation. They now sell cool whip frosting in the cans by the cake mixes. Buy one of the cool whip and one of the regular whipped vanilla frosting's and mix half of each of them together - very complimentary. It makes it not too sweet, but it is a little heavier then the kinda blah cool whip frosting...

I used to like hip whip which was similar.
It's amazing that cool whip doesn't really contain any cream (just casein so it isn't vegan.)
I've had a vegan product called Soyatoo lately, it's in the aerosol can and sprays out. It's fun, though it needs to be thawed to room temperature to spray correctly.
For a cake, cool whip would not hold up well if the cake lasted more than a day, so it isn't good for frosting unless you plan on eating the cake quickly.

I LOVE whipped cream as a frosting. In fact it's my favorite. If I do have to have regular frosting as a option, I only love the whipped cream frosting....
But really just regular whipped cream is best.
Plus, I'm on a diet, and this is my favorite sweet treat.
sugar free jello with a "dollop" of whip cream on top. It makes me feel indulgent.

Um, I don't like whipped cream either, even in frappes, I tend to scrape them off. That's why I usually order iced coffee than frapp. So to answer your question, I'd stick with frosting, a thin covering on the cake would be perfect.

OOh yeah I love whipped cream as a topping for cake. In fact I made a black forest cake with whipped cream as a topping on chocolate cake. Of course I put cherries over the whipped cream cause thats how you make a black forest cake.
Its very tasty! (Instead of granulated sugar, I used powdered sugar).
