You can ask them politely, once more, if they call again to please take your name off of their list. You are not connected with this people and you cannot talk to them. Obviously... Take their name and number and address if you can get it down. Get any and all information they are willing to give you and document the date and time of the call.

Notify the person calling that you have formally asked to be taken off the call list and if they do not stop the calls to you, you will file the necessary claim to stop them all together. If they call back again, for any reason, call them back, ask to speak directly to management or someone in charge and tell them the same thing. Tell them you are not associated with these people and you want to stop being harrassed. The more you tell them about these people, the more they will think you know and thus hound you even more.

They don't care if they are dead, they just want their money. It's not up to you to convince them or the person's whereabouts but that you are not them and want to be left alone.

Best of luck to you.

If these agencies contact you let them know that they have the wrong number. They do not need to know the reason why that person is not there anymore, and actually you telling them that the person is dead would make them think you know them and might be lying. So in this case the less said the better.

Now if they do call, ask them for the Company name, and the person's name that is calling you. Let them know again firmly(but nicely) that they have the wrong number and are not to call again. If they do call again ask to speak to a manager and get a mailing address where you can send a certified letter to formally request they stop calling.

The problem comes when they sell off the debt to another collection agency and the new one will use the same information to call you again. You will have to do the same thing with each company that calls you.

Also, putting yourself on the Do Not Call list will not help in this case. If a company has conducted business with you in the past they are allowed to contact you even if you are on the DNC, unless you specifically tell them otherwise. In this case they have information that the person they are looking for is at that phone number.

If it really becomes a problem, the only thing you can really do without a lot of work is to change your phone number.

It doesn't make sense that the people that lived there before you also had the same phone number. Are you a family member? If so, do you have any obligation for their debts? If it's just the phone number and there is no legal connection, change your number.

Put yourself on the DNC list. Next time they call tell them you will report them for violation as the individual they are calling for does not live there.

don't change your number, just register it donotcall.gov and tell them stop calling me and the person you looking doesn't live anymore, if they keep calling contact your attorney general office and file a complaint.
