Lets see:
Why should we rebuild slums?
Why should we rebuild in an area where there are no jobs?
Why should we rebuild in an area that is only going to flood again?
Why should we rebuild in an area where corrupt politicians diverted money intended for levee upgrades and repairs?

We can rebuild New Orleans, but we need a compasionate leader in the White House! Rebuilding New Orleans, is not a hard thing to do, Bush just doesn't want to be bothered with it. Here's what Obama, can do to rebuild New Orleans! Start a WPA type government program, for young people, who want to learn a trade, and a program for older retirees, who wish to contribute something to this country, and leave a legacy, their family can be proud of. Also, a peace corp. type program, for young people, who have dropped out of school, getting innercity kids involved, and off the streets. Tax cuts for material co.s, and construction companies, who participate in the rebuilding . Have open bids, barring any companies , that have political ties. Also, talk to Russia, and get them to participate, this will give them a way to employ their citizens. Do the same to southeast asia, and South Africa. Get the world involved. Tax incentives for new buisnesses. It can be done, it just takes a little compassion, intellect, and effort. The revenues from a new , New Orleans will be well worth the commitment. Oplis

Well the French Quarter survived quite well. Did the government rebuild south Florida after Andrew? no it did not. Most of New Orleans is still below sea level and the Levy's have not been shored up yet, so why would you build in an area that was still at risk. Can you imagine what the insurance premiums are if you rebuild? You are going to have not only new build construction costs, but high risk. New Orleans will NEVER be as it once was. Sorry, but that is just the way it is. It will be up to private business to rebuild the area, just as it was up to private to build it in the first place.

You say that as if you think that anyone has some moral obligation to rebuild it just because you want it to be so. I question the premise.
While I feel sympathetic to the situation, that doesn't make the rebuilding of New Orleans a federal priority. So you had a massive natural disaster. Why is that a reason to take tax money paid by barbers in Cinncinnati to fix it? How come New Orleans and not various towns in the Appalachians that never had a chance in the first place?
If you want it rebuilt, get off your butt and rebuild it, and stop whining that someone else should do it for you. The whining is why people stopped caring anyway.

New Orleans and its citizens have the responsibility to rebuild New Orleans. "We" don't. New Orleans and its citizens had the responsibility to ensure their own safety, and the safety of their own property and of themselves. New Orleans is below sea level on a coast that frequently sees storms. If the water is higher than your house, raise your house, or make sure the dam is strong enough to hold back anything that comes along. Don't expect someone else to do it for you. They probably won't. There's a good chance they're too busy rowing their own boat to shore.

It's interesting to me the difference in attitudes. When New Orleans was flooded, the southern part of Texas was also flooded. The Sheriff of Beaumont Texas was quoted as stating "Hell, these people don't wait for the government to come rebuild their houses. These are red-necks, they don't need no help". So the red-necked people did it themselves in South Texas.
I guess the people of New Orleans do not have the same attitude and feel that someone else should do it for them as they sit in their government issued temporary trailers drawing government checks no rebuilding happens. It's "someone" else's job.

At some point in history someone got the bright idea to build a city below sea level... on the coast. Technically, that describes a place that's under water. We can forgive a lack of understanding by persons in the past. Keeping in mind a basic line of logic, do we really want to be responsible for rebuilding a city below sea level... ON THE COAST?!? Will those condos be with or without scuba gear included?

Maybe by not rebuilding New Orleans, they ARE rebuilding it. It was a stinkhole of humanity, high murder rate, low economic area. Keeping it smaller might give it a chance at restoring some of its dignity. Areas that are totally wiped out should be left to nature to reclaim as badly needed wetlands, and the areas that are more protected and suitable for building should be built to minimise the effects of natural disasters in the future.

Why bother? Al Gore says it's going to be under 20 feet of water in 10 years from global warming. If anyone really believed that, why would anyone invest anything in New Orleans?? As it is it's below sea level, per global warming advocates it should be completely uninhabitable in as few as 5 years.

"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee,".
(HOS 4:6)
Individuals in New Orleans are failing to seek God for wisdom, knowledge and understanding in ALL workmanship of their lives AND for the Rebuilding of New Orleans. In order to effectively and efficiently rebuild New Orleans; they must grasp this concept. Individuals have to unite and stop destroying one another with words, actions, and politics. Anyone that is seeking knowledge or direction in life should read the Book of Proverbs in the Bible. There are 31 chapters, one chapter of Wisdom for each day of the month. If you want to know how to Rebuild New Orleans; one way is by reading the the Word of God in the Bible Book of Proverbs. In the Name of Jesus, Be Blessed!
