Not all prophecies are vague - some are very detailed. Unfortunately - a lot of the more detailed prophecies - such as those found in the OT have not happened yet so their accuracy cannot be proved one way or another.
You also have to take into consideration that people find supposed prophecies after they already have selected their beliefs.
Christians are a good example of this. The totally skip over the clear cut Messianic prophecies: world leader bringing world peace, uniting Israel as one nation and bringing all people, Jew and Gentile into a close and intimate relationship with God.
Instead - they concentrate on verses that were never meant as prophecies to begin with - let alone Messianic ones. Look at the virign birth, thirty peices of silver and Jesus' birth place 'prophecies'. All these verses are about present events - but are twisted to look like prophecies vague enough to fit Jesus. Other passages are true prophecies - such as Isaiah 53, but are about Israel and not about Jesus.
This type of thinking and behavior is what makes prophecies so vague.
There are very few true prophets throughout history.
Although - that may have something to do with the Jewish policy of stoning those whose prophecies were false. Really cut down on the charlatons.

Jesus gave the correct answer to your question: "Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. "And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive" (Matthew 13:13,14).
It is because God only reveals His truths to those who are teachable.
He also said "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you" (Matthew 7:6).
Have you noticed that Yahoo Answers has about 90 % responders who trample the most precious relevations of God underfoot. That is why they are here and Jesus called them, UH! What?

"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask of God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must *believe* and not doubt . . ." James 1:5, 6a (NIV) [emphasis, t.n.h.'s]
If the prophesies were *not* vague, it would not require any faith to believe them. Then your resultant faith would be *very* weak.
Every Christian *must* remember to put on the "full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes"; for "we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Ephesians 6:10-18 (NIV)

Prophets who are close to GOD can do that.
If they get away from GOD, they can start to guess.
