It's easier to find clam beds on sandy bottoms. The NH seacoast around Portsmouth is rocky. Yet if you go a little bit north to York Beach in Maine, there is sand there. Go to the beach on low tide, just before the tide turns to flood, and walk out to knee level and dig. You should find skimmer clams buried in the sand.
