I would like to find a good book or article/paper on global warming or climate change that comes as close as possible to satisfying the following requirements. Does anything like this exist? If so, please give citation/pointer.

(1) Addresses all of the following:
(a) the definition of and evidence for global warming
(b) to what extent it's being caused by human activities like burning fossil fuels, including quantitative scientific evidence in support or against this.
(c) What we (humanity) need to do to prepare for the effects of global warming.

(2) Is as objective as possible, presenting both sides (to the extent that 2 sides exist), apparent inconsistencies, etc. I want to avoid either extreme - ie. neither "the sky is falling" or "it's a big liberal conspiracy".

(3) fairly technical - at a "Scientific American" level. I'm not an expert in climatology or meteorology, but I have a physics background, including both equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

Permh20: Thanks for the recommendation of << Unstoppable Global Warming: Every 1,500 Years >>. Based on several on-line reviews, it sounds like it may be more biased than I'm hoping to find, but I'll look it over and decide for myself.

Regarding the video "The Great Global Warming Swindle", I do plan to watch it, but just from the title I know it's not what I'm asking for here. Reviews I've read of it also confirm that. I'm looking for something more balanced.

I preface this response by saying that not all info is biased but it is extremely hard to find the contrary. Hope this is useful.

1. National and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/globalwarming.htmlnic
Describes in scientific terms what contributes to the warming and compares concrete collected present and past data. Also dispells some myths.

2. Pentagon report that newspapers ran a few years ago (and which I am told the movie "The Day After Tommorrow" was based on...I read the report and there are similarities but the global warming story's pretty much the same year after year....Anyway, some say it's a hoax...the papers were "leaked" and some question the validity..you decide...But the thought of it being a question of national security does personally peak my interest...

3. and the more recent news through the Associated Press via CBS news...

4. and as always the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stuff, just search the site. Although many see the agency as supporting global warming doomsdayers the info is generally used to support that cause, not necessarily inherently biased.

Good luck!

The book "Unstoppable Global Warming: Every 1,500 Years" by Dr's Avery and Singer fits your requirements. It is also an interesting read for such scientific material.

See the British documentary - The Great Global Warming Swindle.

Some details about it -

Unfortunately, most of the information is quite subjective. You won't find what you're looking for like what part of any is caused by mankind. A lot of it is reactionary hype just carried forward by our ever scientifically aware media. They need a new Monica Lewinsky to keep them occupied. And you will notice someone in here is trying to make money off the whole issue.

Also go to Google videos and search for "The Great Global Warming Swindle"

Both of these references will debunk the lie that the global warming debate is settled.

The only thing I would recommend for you is the documentary put out by a British channel.
