I lived in a neighborhood that I thought was crime free until the helo's started doing the same thing. Turns out the woods next to me were a major place for the people to hide who were on the run. I bought some blackout shades and never had the light issue again.

In the morning after, you can call the non-emergency number. Sometimes the dispatcher will release the info. If you live in an area with a neighborhood watch coordinator, they will be able to find out from the neighborhood police liaison.

You won't be able to file a lawsuit. you have no grounds. The air is an open area for the most part. You claim no ownership to it. Plus, you will never find a lawyer in his/her right mind who will take the case. (what lawyer wants to be known as the one against the cops?)

The helicopter police may appear to be "JAFO" or "Just Another Friendly Observer" but they give people sneaking around in the dark something to think about.
Sometimes, they get calls of prowlers or window-peepers.
It is faster to summon a helicopter and more effective than a patrol car.

I would like to know what kind of lawsuit you will file...How do you know there is no crime? Do you know what is going on? There could be many reasons that a chopper is flying around....

Why to police helicopters shine their lights in yards and neighborhoods at night?
And why do you turn on your porch light at night and lock your door?
It all comes down to the same reason. To discourage criminal behavior and to reassure the people who live there.
It can also act as an audible warning of possible danger in the neighborhood. Circling flights can catch and follow gang activities, discouraging or disrupting criminal behaviors.

Maybe there's no crime because Police Choppers fly around at night shining their lights in people's yards??? You want to sue them for protecting your butt? You must be a lib.

You must live in a bad neighborhood. The only reason would be they are looking for a criminal on the run. You might want to get some home protection or an alarm.

I had one buzzing me. I called the FAA. Got a recorded message and was about to leave a message. Just then the chopper flew back over. Thump, thump, thump...
I'm yelling trying to have my message heard over the thumps. All the while it's being recorded.
They haven't flown over since.
It was a dark brown one, too.

They're just screwing with you. They might also be checking out lawns for the " Spring Green " lawn guys.

Personally, if there is an a**hole running from the police in my neighborhood, I want the light so I can shoot him.

What makes you so certain that a crime did not happen.
Its not police policy to notify civillians when actively investigating a crime...
