It was to send a signal... they knew that there were thousands of people in those buildings and they are a symbol of capitalism and the western world as a whole... They wanted to send a message more than anything... why would they attack the pentagon, US Military superiority... they looked at hitting the trade centers as killing the ecomomy... well it worked... and the Pentagon as the military... well that didnt work so well...
They were Muslim extremeists on their JiHad or however you spell it, basically a radical mission who's sole purpose is to harm the western world.

When you are from an uneducated country where you are taught everything that you believe, and you are taught that you will recieve 13 virgins from Allah. It really isn't that hard to understand. Look at the number of suicide bombers you read about, exactly the same thing.
That is one of my gripes with our country. We do not understand the enemy. They spend months and years to study our system to use it against us. We don't even have enough people to translate Aribic to English. We do not understand our enemy, we do not understand what his concerns are. I spent a lot of time in the middle east and there is a lot that O don't understand.
They are fighting for an ideology that we don't even begin to comprehend. You can't even have our government tell us why they don't like us, and believe me it isn't money, they have more than you ever will.
