Now look through the tube with both eyes open, it looks like there's a hole in your hand. Can anyone tell me what part of your body this tricks, like is it your eye or brain or something like that.

It is your brain.

Like most optical illusion, the eyes see it corrently, but the brain is so use to seeing it a bit differently, that it becomes confused and your perception is a bit skewed.

Cool. I tried it. I think it has to do with "binocular vision"- that each eye sees things from a slightly different angle- just from their position on the head, and the brain is so used to interpreting the info from both eyes simultaneously, we see the hole in the hand.

Do you know the "phantom finger trick too? focus your eyes like on the computer screen while you bring your index fingers together in front of your face about 8-10 inches away - it will look like a little floating double ended finger between your fingertips.... dont know if this is the same phenomenon/causation. but fun. thanks for the reminder.

Very good.
I think it is one's depth perception that this fouls up.
I would change the wording a bit to:
Place your open left hand about three-fourths down the tube. Now, with both eyes open, look through the tube with your right eye.

First time I've ever heard of this. Pretty cool looking if you angle it the right way

i think it is because the light is being projected to the blind spot in your eyes, where the optic nerve breaks into the retina, as there are no rods or cones there....
