Root functions? Like n^(1/3) is the cubic root of n? Other than that, can't think what you mean. But I can tell you all about the calculus of variations, if you like.

are you asking about quadratic roots because typing them out with my character sets is a pain in the butt.

this can be expanded to a multivariate form by switching to the del operator and using vectors... the del operator is also called the nabla, or in the partial form by using partial derivatives.
