A koi swimming down generally means you're trying to overcome hardships of some kind. Although this might seem contradictory - downstream is easier - it's more due to sometimes the wrong path is easier to take (that donut looks sooooooo good...). Taking the correct path takes effort.
A koi swimming upstream generally means the hardship is overcome.

my artist won't do a koi swimming downstream. an upstream swim is traditionally meant to represent the uphill struggle of life and if you're still swimming up then you must be making it. so it seems like you may not be making it as well if you were swimming down.

I'm not sure.. But I've hear a person saying that it's something different for all the others.Something new.. Cause i have a full back of a koi. And it's facing up wards... But maybe u will start the fashion going.. People will find it nice and they will follow..

Nothing more and nothing less
than you believe it does. It's just
a person's choice of placement.
