They probably want "gas" for the answer. However, it is a poor analogy. It assumes that "gas" and "solid" are opposites. However, they are not opposites; they are simply two of the three phases of matter. "Liquid" would be an equally valid answer to this question because neon at standard temperature and pressure is not a solid and nickle at standard temperature and pressure is not a liquid.
