Hello! I live in Virginia and just got back from a vacation to New York with my husband. We had sooo much fun!! I grew up in San Diego, California and I still recommend you go to New York rather than LA. It is so culturally diverse and different than anything I have experienced. We had so much fun. We stayed on Staten Island and took the free ferry back and forth between Staten Island and Manhatten. The ferry takes about 25 minutes and doesn't cost a thing. There is so much to do in New York. We bought a bus tour which cost about $38 a person and they take you all through out the city and explain things that you wouldn't learn if you didn't take the tour. The food out there is very authentic since it is literally the melting pot of America. The subway is a very cheap way to travel ($2.00 one way), where a taxi will be at least $10.00 one way. We went to Times Square, Central Park, SoHo, Broadway, World Trade Center site, and many others. I really recommend you take the tour. It is a very easy way to understand the city. I got there on a Saturday afternoon and left on a Monday afternoon and I feel like it was just the right amount of time. Of course, it could be longer, but we did get to do everything we wanted to see. Have a great vacation.

well im an upstate new yorker...so ive spent a lot of time there...and it's the best city in the entire world. depending on how long you are there depends on how much you could cram in. of course you have to picnic in central park...there's nothing like it...you have to see the museum of natural history...the statue of liberty...if your in the theatre district you have to catch a broadway show...you'll be insanely glad you did. but if you go now you'll also have to go around christmas...because there is absolutely nothing like the city at christmas....it is the most beautiful thing i think i've ever seen. ohhh and i almost forgot..you've got to got to got to see times square. which is write down the street from the theatre district so you'll be all good...then you just have to walk down a few blocks and follow fifth ave(which is also awesome) to central park. forget L.A. and have a great time in New York!!

Since we don't know where you are, it's very difficult to give you any idea of what it might cost you to travel to those cities. Use a website like Travelocity, and plug in the information they ask you for. It will give you air fares, etc. without requiring you to book your trip. (Just one point of reference for you---New York and Los Angeles are 3000 miles apart)
