Wicked!!! it has the most original story, music, sets, costumes, everything! It's perfect! next would be RENT, then Phantom of the Opera! all are good, but Wicked outdoes everything!

I have to say Phantom of the Opera. I saw Miss Saigon, Phantom, Jekyll and Hyde, Cats, and several others. And as cliche as it might sound Phantom is the best. I've seen it 5 times. The music the absolute best. And the scenery. When they travel into the underground moat area, it seems as if they've gone to a seperate world. And the way Christine is torn between the two men. The duets were just the most heartrending and romantic. Fabulous singing.
RENT is my next suggestion. I loved it. It's very different. Quite modern. The songs are definitely memorable and not what you expect.

You did realize that people have many opinions on this question, and there's no right or wrong answer? I
Anyways, IMO, I think Romeo et Juliette : de la Haine A l'amour is the best musical for me. It's a foreign musical, but it has fantastic music, performers, costumes, choreography, and lighting.
The French version is the original, but it has been translated in Dutch, German, Hungarian, Russian, and very loosely into English.
Even though it's in a different language, it has beautiful music. To hear two of the most popular songs, click the two links below. They are the professional music videos made for the songs, so they're a bit modernized. The actual stage version was set back in the 1500's (the realm setting)
Aimer (To Like/Love) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kL8qeWLoI8A
Les Rois du Monde (Kings of the World) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mc5wi3zDbjM
I really hope you get to like this musical. The very first clip that got me addicted was here : http://youtube.com/watch?v=3eKGqPP5jhc
It's the Dutch version of "Aimer" with Veerle Casteleyn (from the Cats film)
Enjoy!

If you are only asking for a matter of opinion, then I would have to say "Mama Mia". How brilliant was that idea; someone took almost all the best ABBA songs of all time, and put them into a musical with a sweet storyline, not exactly believeable, but hey, its a musical! Everytime I have been to this performance (3X's and I never tire of it) people are dancing in the aisles, everyone is standing, clapping, and cheering. It's like a rock concert! If you have never been to Mama Mia, you must go now.

I love West Side Story. It is a musical based on Romeo and Juliette. It takes place in New York, whith Portorican gangs against American Gangs. It has fantastic music.
Another great musical is Cabaret, though not for very small kids. It is about this american writer who goes to Berlin, when the natzis take over, it is a love story.
Another good musical is Oklahoma, this is less seriouse, and very nice. Oklahoma

Wicked is pretty Wicked.
A brother of a friend of mine had a hand in making that Avenue Q one.
If Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick as still doing producers that would be worth seeing.
