The difference is being taught , reading, what people tell you about Him is knowing about God.
Knowing God is having a personal relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Jesus said, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except by Me.
God draws you to Jesus.
You accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
You admit you are a sinner. (we all are)
You ask Jesus to forgive you of your sins.
You invite Jesus into your heart/life, and your relationship begins with Jesus.
He will send the Holy Spirit to reveal Truth and to guide you through your life.
God would love nothing more to have a relationship with you.

knowing about God is only information about Him. Knowing God is a having a personal relationship with Him. For instance you can know about someone that you have never met, but if you know that person , you have met Him. When you want to know someone you spend time with Him, not just receiving info about Him. I chose to know God= the only way I could do that was to accept His Son as payment for my sin, so that I can have a personal relationship with Him. Spending time alone with God is the way to get to know Him better.

Billions of people around the world know about God, but only those who accept Jesus Christ as their Savior can know God.
Matthew 11:27 "all things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son, except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him."
John 14:6 &7 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father , but through Me.
If you had known Me, you would have known my Father also; from now on you know Him and have seen Him."

Lots of people know "about" God. Few people have a relationship with God through His son...which the bible says is the only way to the Father. Jesus said to the Pharisees, who claimed to be children of Abraham, and insisted they were children of God, "if you have not the son, you have not the father". Anyone who attempts to come to God through any other than the biblical Jesus Christ....will never know Him.

The difference between knowing God and knowing about God in my opinion is as follows:
To know God is to have a personal relationship w/Him.
To know God is to accept His Beloved Son for the propitiation of sins, be baptized in His name and be filled with the Holy Spirit.
To know God is to obey his commandments, continue on to live holy, and to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.
To know about God is the hearing of the ear what was said about him, or what you've read about Him.
To know about God is what you've experienced during your lifetime about spirituality and religion.
Peace,
Hope

Hey Kid!
The difference is everything. A personal knowledge and relationship with God will decide your future.
"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent" John 17:3

I'd say none of us truly "knows" God, but we all seem to know about God or think we know of the lack of God (depending on your belief). Example: It's like we know of Julia Roberts as the actress, but only her close friends truly know who she is.
