only 15% of the US population gets regular exercise yet everybody knows it should be performed almost daily, that pretty much says it all. in general people are inherently lazy and fear change. breaking bad habits and forming good habits takes a conscious effort

Our fast paced, get it now society has led us to this unbearable yet comfortable spot in life we call fat. Blame it on the noticeably higher price of healthy food, blame it on TV, blame it on the pills that promise "in 2 weeks" to shed those pounds and make you look like a [once overweight] super model (after the lipo) it's all setting us up for failure.
The most obvious reason they want a quick fix is because the conventional way takes so much time and dedication. People spend this extra money that they complain they don't have and buy these diet pills or get lipo. Then invetiably the fat comes back and they are left wondering why on earth it didn't last, as they shove another burger down their throat. All it takes is 2 weeks to get into the habit of eating better and excersizing. The first week is hell, the second week is tolerable, and by the third week, it's second nature. But people don't realize it's all or nothing. Get sidetracked before you hit your goal and you might as well just go ahead and hook up to an iv chock full of lard and sugar. Because you will be back to your old eating habits before you know it.
And yes, I have dieted, I went from a plus size to a size 6. I know what it's like, so people, stop being lazy, stop making excuses, just do it!

There's a bunch of reasons. First they want fast results. They aren't against eating and exercising, but that takes forever. If you have 50 pounds to lose and you do it the right way (1-2 pounds per week), that could take a year to get off and if you have more than that, even longer. It is frustrating to get on the scale and it doesn't say a lower number after you have worked your *** off and ate healthy proportions and food. They feel if they could just get the weight off quickly they could keep it off. And a lot of the time they are trying to lose weight for a special event that isn't usually that far away, like a reunion or a wedding. Nobody wants to be fat and when they finally set their mind to not being fat, they can't get the weight off quick enough. It feels like failure when it takes a long time.
Been there done that. In my life I have been under weight, average weight and over weight. I'm currently doing the diet and exercise regimen. It's not easy, but so far so good. I've lost 8 pounds in the last 3 weeks. I've gotten to the point that a pound lost every week is better than a pound gained, but it has taken me years to come to that conclusion and I still have my days where I wish I could lose it all by tomorrow. I think it's just part of human nature.
I think you would have to have been over weight some time in your life to understand.

Could it be because it seemed like gaining the weight happened quickly so losing it should happen just as quickly? :P Speaking for myself (I'm not fat or anything, but I could stand to lose), it's a matter of will power. I'm tired from working, have other things to do when I come home, and am consumed with Answers. On top of all that, unhealthy food is often cheaper than healthy food and doesn't go bad as quickly. Plus Coke tastes really good. Did you know that if you drink 3 soft drinks a week that you'll have added 5 pounds of FAT to your body in a year? Ick. It's a lot easier to put on the weight than it is to lose it, and it's easy to become discouraged when you don't see immediate results. I'm not making excuses- just providing the reasons we often fail.

Laziness, ignorance, naivety? Many reasons....
I guess it's a by product of the consumer culture we live in, many people expect to just be able to 'buy' a quick fix. Unfortunately we live in a society where we expect everything to be handed to us on a gold platter.
Don't worry, there are a few of us out there who know how to eat healthy and know what hard exercise means, we don't all take our bodies for granted :)
Yeah, I agree too many excuses!! Health is so important, why jeopardize that by being too lazy to do the right thing!

Exercise is arduous work. People don't like to drive their fat asses to the gym and do some real work, or if they do they sit around for 1 hour and call it work out. Eating right means a lot of fruit or vegetable, which people don't like, they need their golden arches (mcdonalds).
And both takes time, it is not a one week deal.
And to top it all of, they just don't care. They hear on TV garbage like "be happy with who you are" and "bigger is better"(which goes for most things, but not your body size).

Americans (and other members of what is known as western culture) are so used to getting things their way, now, that they no longer have any ability to put forth the effort on their own part to get something that does not magically appear

Because people haven't learned to work hard at things...everyone is used to instant gratification...you see it everywhere. Everyone always has to have everything NOW!!!
