how does the story go about putting blood on the door to keep your children from being killed.

Passover was instituted by God during the tenth plague in exodus. It was to celebrate God passing over them when he killed the first born of every living thing in egypt. It continued untill Christ died, and now it is replace with comunion. "Do this in remembrance of me"

It's about sacrifice, which true God never desired nor ever took pleasure in, since the will of God is: I will have mercy, and not sacrifice; Not then, not now, not ever.
