If you eat 100% whole grain bread and pasta that hasn't been enriched, aren't those foods good for you. I thought that carbohydrates were the body's main energy source..why is everyone avoiding them while "dieting"?

You are 100% correct. Anyone with any real knowledge about nutrition will tell you carbohydrates are essential to fuel the body and should make up about 60% of your diet. Whole grain bread and wheat/whole grain pasta are the best options (as well as legumes), they raise blood sugar levels slower to give you lasting energy.

Good to see not everyone has been brainwashed by unhealthy, impracticable "low carb" diets.

"bad" is a subjective term when it comes to the diet. breads and pastas are not naturally occurring so they are processed food items which means they are typically low in fiber. carbohydrates that are low in fiber have a high glycemic effect. a high glycemic index means a higher amount of insulin is secreted. when insulin levels rise too high fat burning is halted for several hours as now the body is in storage mode. the higher the daily fiber intake the lower resting insulin levels will be.

breads and pasta would be good as compared to french frys but when compared to low GI carbs like lentils, barley, beans, whole oats, etc. which are all high in soluble fiber and all natural they are "bad"

they very easiest way to determine if a carbohydrate is good or not is if it dissolves in your mouth with little to no chewing, it's not good for you.

It is the Atkins mentality. Whole grains are actually good for you.

Carbohydrates are the primary energy source for the brain. In addition they are the only fuel source for the erythrocytes (red blood cells) and the kidneys.

It's ok in moderation but really it's not the best thing for you because of the carbs.
