Peanut butter typically does not support bacteria and/or mold growth because of its low moisture content (less than 1%) and high oil content. However, the oils can become rancid over time. When peanut butter become rancid, it develops an odd, oily flavor and odor. There are several factors that contribute to the time it takes for peanut butter to become rancid (i.e temperature, additives, oxygen availability). Basically, if it still tastes and smells okay, its probably still safe to consume, but most peanut butters start to turn rancid after 9 to 12 months under normal conditions.

i say eat it why not

It does not generally go bad if kept in a cool place. If it gets warm, the fats can get rancid. If t is warm and moist and the peanut butter is contaminated it can grow mold. If it smells okay and you just opened it ,it should be fine. If I had purchased it in Oct. 2006, it would not be gone yet.

Well, thats interesting coz i've seen bad honey, it goes all granular. anyway, i've nearly finished a jar of peanut butter that i've had for a while. I picked it up tonight and it was warm prompting me to look this question up. It was warm last time but not as warm, so i have eaten it twice supposedly "bad" and am ok. A good old thick spreading of the stuff too... mmMMmmmmm.
Date stamps on food, especially the longer periods have to be on the cautious side so in ideal conditions will almost certainly last longer.

No question about it. Peanut butter will go bad. One: That's why they put an expiration date on the jar or lid.
Two: The Food Admin says so.
The only food that will not go bad is Honey.

What "Science" said is correct. People are goofy about some things and they over-react. It wasn't open, it's not THAT old, it doesn't have the distinct smell of rancid/bad peanuts/peanut oil...it's good to go. Eat it. Don't waste food.

Throw it away....the peanuts get rancid.....Expiration dates are stamped on canned goods as well as all food for a reason. After the expiration date it isn't safe to eat.

Peanut butter can get mold in it that you can't see and will make you ill.

Yes. It could turn rancid.

I'd throw it away. For $ 3.00 is it worth being sick for a day or two?
