Hey guys have a question for you. I was walking in my local mall when I brushed up against a flower box outside. I was wearing shorts, and since they were shorter than the height of the flower box the end of them, the left side, drug on the soil inside the box. I looked down and noticed there was one of those little flossing contractions dumped in the flower box, you know the kind that looks like a hook and has floss suspended from the end for you time use. I noticed too that there was what appeared to be fresh blood on the floss too. My shorts touched therm, and my shorts touched my skin, naturally, so I'm worried that I might get something from the blood. Let's assume the blood was HIV positive. I took a shower with hot water and soap and threw the shorts away, but I'm worried that the HIV could have been spread to other parts of my skin in the shower, and into my hair, etc. I am worried that I didn't kill the virus by taking a hot shower. Please help, I am freaking out.
Thanks

i totally understand why you are freaked out, because this is now an epidemic that is affecting a lot of human beings. From the story, it seems as if it was not a lot of blood, and plus, it did not penetrate you're skin so you should be okay. Now, you cannot "kill the virus" by taking a hot shower, it is a much more complicated disease....but since you did not mention the blood getting into a cut or anything penetrating your skin you should be ok. But if you feel it is necessary, go to a doctor....not yahoo questions :)

HEY! I just gave you a score of 7 for this exact scenario 20 min ago! Now I guess I am gonna have to drop ya down to a 5. Poor Bob. Ratings are dropping, his audience is getting wise to you and bored! Boooo Booooo!
For the freaking out bit I would suggest Prozac. It is supposed to help with stuff like anxiety about nada.
For all the made up exposures I would suggest a writing class. You should have better developed scenarios and instances and maybe even bother to look up a few new diseases to be exposed to by now... oh well!
(and the answer as always... no, dear, no way, no how)..

Pretty sure your exposure was minimal at best. The blood was dried, you didn't actively rub it into your skin and you cleaned the area afterwards.
Don't freak out. If you still feel concerned, either go to your doctor and get a test; or go to a free clinic. They can have results for you in a couple of days. Having a regular HIV test is a good thing to do whenever you have physical.

There is no way you have HIV when the HIV virus touches air it dies so there is nothing to worry about. You will NOT die. And mostly HIV is transmitted by the things below
If you are not satisfied with this answer go to a hospital and get tested remember there is nothing wrong about been tested.
Remember HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is only transmitted by unprotected sex w/ HIV positive person, breastfeeding, and dirty needle use.

HIV doesnt spread its a blood bourne retrovirus, can only be contracted through exchange of bodily fluids, ie sex, sharing needles etc (and not kissing or using same toilets as ppl still believe)
ur fine
but if ur worried go t a gum clinic get full sexual checkup, always a good idea, or donate blood (sounds crazy but they screen all donations for hiv aids, so u'd kno (in the uk at least))

Don't be a germophobe. Nothing will happen to you. First there has to be way for the virus to enter the blood. It can't do that through intact skin. Secondly, the virus cannot survive outside the body. Third, whatever MIGHT have been on you is long gone and down the drain. Relax.

The chances of HIV surviving in this circumstance (before you brushed it) are virtually nil. Even in circumstances where direct blood contact in open air is involved transfer is difficult. Transfer by retained blood in a needle where it can't dry is more likely. It is my impression that there is no proven case of transfer from fluids on toilets, etc., where air exposure is involved.

HIV is a virus transmitted through large quantities of body fluids. A small amount of the virus will probably not effect you, especially if it only contacted the skin. I wouldn't worry.

You don't have to worry if your skin was not cut. It can only be contracted through blood to blood transfer. Meaning your blood would have to mix with the blood on the floss.

HIV virus is extremely fragile....there is absolutley no way you have HIV, and EXTREMELY low chance that you contracted anything from this flossing contraption. You threw away a perfectly good pair of shorts...could just washed them.
