JAKE,
THIS STRIP OR BLACK RING AROUND YOUR TOOTH IS HARD OLD CALCULUS. IT'S NOT A DEAD PULP OF THE TOOTH. WHEN A PULP DIES IN INSIDE A TOOTH, THE ENTIRE TOOTH TAKES ON A DARK SHADE.

A PROFESSIONAL DENTAL CLEANING WITH A SPECIAL INSTRUMENT CALLED AN ULTRASONIC SCALER CAN EASILY REMOVE THESE HARD DEPOSITS.

It's either a cavity or it could be stain from coffee/tea/tobacco use. You'll have to see the dentist to have it diagnosed properly. It sounds very much like a cavity, though, and an xray will determine the amount of decayed area. If it's just stain, it can be removed with a thorough cleaning. Good luck!

There is a probability that your pulp might be dead or you may have a cavity. Do you remember hitting that specific tooth where the black line appears? Traumatized it? Or maybe they did endodontic treatment on it a while back? If you didnt get endodontic treatment on it and you think you might have traumatized your tooth, see a endodontic (dentist specialized in root canal treatment).
