By land (car, bus, train, etc.) or sea/lake you need an official photo I.D. (Drivers License) and proof of Citizenship, (birth certificate). Going into Canada, they don't always ask for proof of Citizenship, but best to have it with you, and you will definitely need it to come back into the U.S.
Currently passports are needed for air travel to/from all countries, and as early as Jan 2008 (date not yet set) passport will be needed for land/sea crossings as well.

Going "to" Canada there are no new rules. It is your re-entry into the USA where you need a passport now; if you are flying. If you are driving you will not need a passport to return to the USA until 2008.
Border guards are "asking" for passports because it is one piece of ID which covers what 2-3 pieces of other ID will do. Coming to Canada it just makes it easier, but not required. (WHTI is an AMERICAN based law which only has impacts on what comes INTO the USA)

I just heard a radio report, less than an hour ago. You need a passport to fly to Canada or Mexico, and I assume all other countries as well. Other means of travel have not changed yet. Next year you will need a passport to enter either country.

On a tour bus, only a drivers license, and a birth certificate.
This is going from Detroit to Canada, and a check on the return also.
by car, plane etc. ??? Go to Canada.gov ?????
