Nothing. A dog is a very personal choice and surprising someone with a puppy that you've picked out is never a good idea. If your girlfriend truly wants a puppy, she needs to choose the breed, do a lot of research on that breed, then find breeders and research them. You can help her pay for the puppy and its supplies when she finds what she wants.

Do NOT surprise her with a puppy! It seems like a great idea, but this is probably the worst gift someone could give or receive. You will be saddling her with a HUGE financial commitment. You pay a few hundred for the puppy, and then the other $800 (in the first year alone!) will come out of HER pocket! YOU don't want to spend your life savings on it, but by getting her a dog, you are asking HER to spend her life savings on it. Taking care of a dog is not cheap, and it will be emptying her pockets for the next 12+ years! It will also be a very big commitment of her time. Forget about going on dates with her for a very long time, as you can’t just leave a puppy alone. They need to be taken out every few HOURS, even at night! Not to mention the accidents and the chewing…puppies mean stained carpets and ruined possessions.

Please please PLEASE discuss it with her before you make any decision. Most pets that are bought as surprise presents end up in shelters because the person who received them either didn’t want them or wasn’t ready for the responsibility. Not only that, but if she agrees that she wants a dog, SHE needs to pick it out. A dog is a very personal thing, and she may be looking for a different personality than you would pick out for her. DO NOT just ask her what kind of dog she wants - if you include her in picking it out, she will love it 10 times more and be much happier with it. Please trust me on this. The choice to get a dog, and the individual dog itself, is not the kind of thing someone else can decide for you.

Instead of getting her a puppy, why don't you make a basket up with all she would need for a puppy (perhaps a dog breed book, some puppy treats, a collar and a leash, that sort of thing) and include a little card saying "good for one puppy". That way she can choose her own puppy with you, resulting in you having the pleasure of surprising her and she having the pleasure of choosing the right puppy for her.

Your heart is in the right place, but a puppy is a living thing too, not something particularly well suited to "being returned" if your girlfriend didn't exactly love the lil guy you chose. And, really, that is very important to consider too.

Good luck with your surprise for your girlfriend!

With a smile,

If I were you, I would take her with me to get a dog, and make sure that whatever dog you get will be to her liking.

Take into consideration her lifestyle, and her living arrangements. You don't want to get a big dog if she doesn't have the room for it.

You don't have to spend a fortune on a dog. There are plenty of really good puppies at the local animal shelter .

After all, it's not about how much money you spend, it's about the love that the dog will bring into her life !!!

Pets shouldn't be given as gifts. Consider surprising her with a visit to the local shelter so she can pick out a dog for herself. A puppy is a lot of work and it is not appropriate to surprise someone with a load of responsibility like that. Also, even if you buy it, she's still left with the financial responsibility of vaccines, spay/neuter, food, dewormings, training, supplies, toys, grooming, and everything else that goes along with owning a dog.

Make sure she wants a dog first, if so, an adult dog from a shelter is the way to go.

You should never give animals as gifts, they are living, breathing creatures, not objects that you give to someone as a surprise.

And never buy a puppy from a pet store or from an ad in the local paper - that's the WORST way to get a puppy!

Surprise her with a STUFFED dog with a bowl & collar & a homemade certificate for a pup. Research the best breed for her lifstyle with her take her with you to get the pup. This way you dont make a major goof of say giving her a cute poeranian when she had her heart set on a great dane... Besides think of the bonding moments!

Maybe a Yorkie or a toy poodle. Get it from a private breeder not a pet store. Pet stores buy their puppies from puppy mills and they have diseases and are sick all the time. Try going to a non kill shelter and see if you can find a nice pet for your girlfriend. Sometimes they get in beautiful breeds. Also consider a cat too..They make wonderful pets and you don't have to walk them either.

You should take her to your local rescue/shelter, and have her pick out the puppy/dog that she falls in love with.

That's the ONLY way to insure that she'll like the dog, and you won't have to spend a fortune.

Well, first you have to take a look at her lifestyle to see what kind of energy level the dog would need to have or she would need to have. There is a dog breed quiz that gives you a list of breeds that would be best for you based on the questions. You will need to know what she would want her ideal dog to be like. The website is www.glowdog.com here is another website that will give information on the breed once you have found one. You can also find breeders on it. www.dogbreedinfo.com I hope you find one.
