Which wine is sweeter Merlot or Cabernet?

Neither. Red wines are not traditionally sweet.

Merlot may be less tannic (what many beginners feel is bitter) and more fruity.

Cabernet tends to be more complex and may be drier, especially cheap or bad or young cabernet.

Similar to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is less tannic and less blackcurrant like. It produces a plumper, juicier, rounder wine that somehow seems sweeter. Often used in blended wines to smooth out the rough edges. Plums + fruitcake + roses = Merlot

Pinot Noir
By 150 B.C. Pinot Noir was growing in France. Today, it' is still the most important grape of the Burgundy region. Pinot Noir's color may range from cherry red to purple-red and even brown as the wine ages. Raspberries + strawberries + cherries + currants = Pinot Noir

Syrah (Shiraz)
Classic Shiraz wines from France's Rhone valley and Australia are dark, full-bodied, powerful, alcoholic wines with great aging potential. Blackberries + pepper + cloves = Syrah

Go to a blush if you want sweeter but not sugary wine in the "red" catagory. We can get a lot sweeter but they are just pop with alocohol.
