other than bloodwork, is there any other way to find out?

You can get mono from sharing saliva. Kissing or drinking out of the same glass or even just inhaling after someone has sneezed that has the bug. There is no at home test. He needs to go to the doctor and have a culture done so that she can on some antibiotics.
