Depends what you consider as being better, if it's reliability, the Pontiac rates higher than Nissan in Vehicle Dependability Study by JDPower which is the authority of automotive research data. I'm providing a link for that.
The Altima just got touched up this year with a few toys like touch start/stop, bluetooth, and a few other toys the Pontiac doesn't have. Although for the Pontiac, you can probably take advantage of special deals and incentives like 0% APR financing.
As for drivability, the Altima is a bit sportier in V6 trim, whereas the I-4 rides a bit softer, although I get annoyed at the accelerator, which is programmed to be a bit too touchy and will spin it's wheels easily.
Although if you like the G6, I would say take a look at the Saturn Aura, essentially they are almost twins under the skin, although Saturn has great customer service, no haggle price policy as well. The vehicle rides a bit more European, than the G6 equivilent, and the materials are a bit better than what you would find in the G6.
Hope this helps ;-)

I have a Nissan Altima 2.5 and it's pretty reliable (and cheaper!)...to be on the safe side, go get the Consumer Report on cars, it will show the year and car and list the bad/good things with each vehicle - I know that it rated the Altima high - also make sure you test drive to feel the car.
p.s. in regards to A A - he mentioned the saturn, i had one of those for years as well (well 2 actually) and they are extremely reliable.

If the Pontiac is powered by Toyota as so many GM cars are now then I would go with the Pontiac otherwise go with the Nissan

i would go with the nissan altima. I say this because it is a good car and it has been around for awhile this means the manufacture has worked out all of the problems. plus it is a nice car and i believe it gets better gas milage. also you should be able to find one cheaper than the g6.

If you are referring to 2007 models, nissans are still far superior to a pontiac. They hold their value far better, and are more high tech and qaulity than even a solstice or gto. Especially one with the CVT and 3.5. You'd never drive a pontiac again.

The Pontiac G6 is sweet. I wouldn't buy one though because it's front wheel drive and I hate front wheel drive.

I'd go for the Altima. I have a Pontiac. I would never buy one again. I'll leave it at that.
