My neighbors dog had pierced ears when she got it, because the breeders show their dogs, and they do that with any pups they sell so it cannot be shown. She took them out right away, because the earrings were to heavy and stretching her ears out. I told her I thought it was awful, and she agreed, but she had put a deposit on the dog when it was a pup, and was not told that they would pierce it's ears before it left. She didn't know about the ears until she went and picked the pup up. They explained it cut down on their compation in the show ring. I told her to file a complaint against them with AKC, but I don't know if she did. What is really sad is that they are very popular in the show ring, and are supposedly good breeders. I however would not buy anything from them, and I think they should be banned from being able to show or breed dogs. I think it is wrong, cruel, and it should be illegal.

People dock tails and crop ears of certain breeds to make them more "standard". This serves zero purpose other than vanity of the owner. Cat owners de-claw their cats (a horrifying procedure that can cause lifetime pain and serious lifetime deformity and damage) because they're too lazy to clip their claws regularly and train them not to scratch. These are all forms of mutilation.
Philosophically speaking, ear piercing is just as vain and damaging. But not illegal, per say. As in the police are not going to drag you to jail. Pets are considered property. And are not afforded the same rights or protections as humans in many cases. However, depending on where you live, you could be hotlined to the local Humane Society or Animal Control and be investigated for cruelty. Some cities do have extensive animal rights legislation on the books (such as San Francisco), and you could end up losing your dog.
With that said, the outer ear is not a "lobe" like humans have. And does not react the same way to puncture wounds. You would be opening up a route for a much larger tear, as well as infection, growths, and possible abscess. And just try keeping a dog from trying to remove a foreign object from its body. Especially on their head.
If this is a rhetorical question; well done! If you're really considering this; this is quite possibly the most ridiculous idea ever.
You have the right to mutilate yourself in any way you see fit. But to impose your vanity on another living thing that cannot speak for itself is wrong.

Don't necessary think it is illegal but why would you want to pierce a dog's ears? I guess as long as you would take good care of the piercing and kept infection from setting in it wouldn't be wrong but I hate to think that would start a fad. A lot of people would think it was a status thing and then not take care of the dog's ears. Please don't.

It is plain bad! I don't know if it is illegal, but don't do it!. It would hurt the dog's ears alot {more than it hurts human's to get ears pierced} Furthermore, they would get infected way easier than humans get infected. They would probably just claw or chew out the earings anyway, which would really hurt them. PIERCING A DOG'S EAR IS WRONG!!!!

If you think about it it seems like it would look cool, or be cool to have your dogs ears pierced, but.........1) It would be bad for the dog, imagine...when they scratch or something they could rip it out and cause a tear that could get infected...2) If caught you could get popped for animal cruilty. Sorry Guy!

Yes. Dogs feel pain. They don't know what it is to feel trendy or pretty to benefit from a piercing. It will just get infected when they play and get dirty.
It is illegal. It's animal cruelty. Don't think about it. PETA will eat you up spit you out eat you up again and pop you out in the toilet.

Mel's right - how would you feel if your poor little dog got its earring caught on something, and really did some damage to his/her ear?
I think it's cruel to put them through any pain that isn't absolutely necessary for their survival, or to otherwise ensure they maintain good health.
I even hate having to take my dogs for vaccinations!
