Banks are going to give the best exchange rate... If you are staying at a hotel, most hotels will exchange currency for you also... You can use your ATM in the UK (as long as your pin is only 4 digits) Also, believe it or not, many merchants/retailers will also except US dollars, but the exchange rate is not the best... Have fun!!!

RE:
Where would I go to exchange dollars for British pounds besides the airport?
I need to get actual bills and coins because I'm going to give them to her in a card at her party.

Who else does currency exchange in your town? Do the banks? Is there an American Express office there? I would go to a bank in my town (Bank of America or Wells Fargo) to exchange dollars for pounds (or the reverse). If you live in a popular area, I have found that some bigger hotels can also exchange currency (when I have traveled outside of the US). If nothing else, ring up the nearest big hotel in your area and ask them for advise. Good luck!

Many banks will function as changers of foreign currency or you could look up 'Currency Exchange' in the phonebook.
Foreign currency for a trip is a neat present, and looks good inside a card, but if you are simply looking to give funds for a trip abroad I suggest looking into pre-paid credit cards. They can be used in most countries without having to do any messy exchanging, and they are also safer in that if you lose them or if they are stolen, you can call and have them replaced!

Most banks should be able to do the exchange. However, you may need to call ahead to make sure that they will have some currency on hand. Not all banks keep every kind of currency at all times but they can usually get it.

Have the taxicab swing by *any* bank on the way (unless they are picking you up at the airport). You'll probably get a better exchange rate at a regular bank, too.

post office, great exchange rate and no commission (last time I was there, but that was November), otherwise look for places in the touristy areas that advertise no fees, like Marks and Spencers, that's where I bought the sterling when I got to London.

You can also withdraw money from your debit or credit card from an ATM abroad, if you want to give money in the country's currency. ATM's usually give the best exchange rate.
