As a NAVY Veteran I salute you. Let me assure boot camp alone will push you to physical, and emotional limits you never dreamed you had. You will run faster, climb higher, push past pain and through the walls taht you never knew existed. You will do this in order to survive. Your mind will become sharpened with your classroom studies, in Marine Corp History, The military code of ethics, and the many test you must pass in weaponry training, just to name a few. You will undoubtedly travel to locations that will broaden your horizons and your world view. At boot camp alone you will be to learn what it truly means to work on a team composed of others from various different ethnic & cultural backgrounds. When I finished my service duty I did return to college to finish my formal education. It sounds like you have plans to do the same . BRAVO ! One step at a time..the only way you will possibly not keep your mind sharp is to get involved with drugs and or alcohol abuse. Both, as you are aware have the potential to become addictive. Once that occurs you hurt your brain abilities, and capabilites. And , consequently you harm the health of your physical & mental well being. Enjoy your off duty time pursing pleasures in the hobbies you enjoy. Whether this is reading, sailing, scuba diving, tennis, what ever it is it will keep well rounded...and that will ensure that you stay grounded. Best wishes ! Solider. You already sound like a SHARP shooter to me. :)

There is something about training, this is a gift any person in the world needs to accept, unfortunately 45% accept the too. Another 25% desire too. and last but least the rest do not know it is better than anything. Jumping a car on roller blades, play the drums, getting straight A's, helping an elder person across the street, search and rescue successfully. I shut down, listen, do not expect, follow instructions (peacefully, sometimes it is not what you want). A person has to be a follower to become a leader. (with the exceptions of situations like Jamestown). You are an independent individual in the long run when you stand before God, and there is only one. And go upon each day it is okay. You can learn to be you, when you are not influenced by all the things they say on the news, the problems, I can not say, you know... Fire Dog Fire Protection, and I am just a girl, that believes in Jesus... It is so simple.

Take advantage of the on base colleges or go to college online while you are in the Corps. The Corps will pay and you can use your G.I. Bill when you get out to either finish or get your Masters. (Check out www.umuc.edu)

If you don't have time for college, try reading just about anything or at least watch the news and stay-up with current events. Thinking about things that are happening around really help to keep you sharp.

I went to college before I went into the Marines and I made ok grades but not great.

I am going to college now that I am out of the Marines and I make straight A's period. From what I hear this isnt uncommon. I guess I am more responsible I dont know.

So..I wouldnt worry about your mind getting dull.

Extensive reading is always good for keeping the mind sharp. Another way is to drink alcohol. I just read an article today that said that 3 glasses of wine a day will improve your IQ. It has to do with blood vessels etc...Studies found that those that drank 3 glasses of wine a day had a higher IQ than those that didn't. Strange but oddly enough it makes sense.

Hey i am in the marine's and have been for 4 and a half years, While you are in thier is a place at every base called base education they will point you in the right direction for you to work on the degree you want while you are in, I am only 1 class away from my associates in Criminal Justice it takes a while long but it will be worth it when you get out, they also have Clep Test which you can take for free, and if you pass a Clep for that class you get college credits for it but don't just take my word for it once you get to your first duty station ask where the Base Education is they will get you on your way

Trust me, you have nothing to worry about. College will be like going to Disneyland in terms of mental demands. The High School knowledge will come back and you'll have a fundamental grasp of concepts and theories needed for college.

Things get soo much easier when you're out, and frankly, it will probably tick you off at how undiscliplined and unwilling your peers will be to study.

What you gain in the Corps will influence you in a positive way for the rest of your life. After 13 years on Active Duty, I can't even begin to tell how awful it is watching my co-workers complain about tasks and assignments.

During basic, don't even think about it.
Don't forget about it, just put it in the back of your mind for a few months.

After that, talk to someone, about taking college courses while in the Corps. They too, want to keep your mind sharp.

read. that helps a lot. maybe you can make little practice books for you to work on from previous homework so you dont forget how to do things. i have been out of school for 3 years and i have forgotten a lot because i dont use the info a lot, but you will need to know that stuff when you do go to school. i would just recommend reading various types of books though. that will help the most, plus you will be learning while you are there so it is not like you are just sitting watching tv.

oh and good luck and thanks

Education is available on and off base....The military has a way to keep your mind sharp. Sfter all your basic training, you will have plenty of time to study, take classes, read etc, Don't foget your GI education benefits, afterwards,,

Good Luck & Semper Fi
