GT racing, as in Grand Touring classes of sports car racing? The good news is there are alot of opportunities for racing in such classes. The bad news is that developing the skills to be successful takes alot of time, and that any form of racing can be very very expensive.

The two best spots for entry into motorsports would be: 1) Go Karts - go karts offer a chance for inexpensive (at least in terms of motorsports) seat time, a chance to develop some basic skills, and when racing wheel to wheel, a great introduction to race craft; 2) Autocross - this gives you the chance to learn how to find the right line, begin to develop and tune your car control, and is also an inexpensive entry point. With karting you will normally rent a kart in an arrive and drive program, while in autocross you will use your own car (pretty much any car will do, it's more about the driver than the car). Best of all, both of these are lots of fun. When you go to either, pay attention to the faster drivers! Watch what they do and listen to see where they get on the throttle. Talk to anyone and everyone you can about why they choose the lines they drive and so on.

From here, the next step wouldbe to try something like a Drivers Ed/Open Track event - which is basically taking your car to a race track for open lapping. I generally would recommend this ahead of pursuing race school since it's a little calmer atmosphere, and it doesn't require a fully equipped race car! It offers the chance to further develop your skill, though you won't focus on things like passing or protecting your line.

That comes along at the next step, which would be to attend a race school with the goal of getting a competition license. At this point you will need to either own or rent a race car. Everything until now can be done with some cost conscious measures in place (though all of them can also become quite expensive too depending on what you do and how competitive you want to be at those levels). Now though, cheap becomes at least $10-20k/year budget for the least expensive options.

Once you have a license, something like spec-Miata would be a great class for someone looking for GT Class competition. This will fall into the low end cost wise, and offer lots of great competition. Your primary goal is to be successful in order to attract sponsorship and offers for other race opportunities. Success opens both doors. Continued success in those opportunities can lead to professional levels of GT Classes.
