Its the self denial thing. It helps bring us closer to God if we can put our sufferings with him.
Some also save the money they would have spent on a meal and donate it to the poor.

I don't know much about the religious reason for fasting.
But the Spiritual reason you fast is to overcome the flesh, so you can become more spiritual.

ohh you would be surprised,but its not staving yourself
we worship Allaah by doing this act of worship which is beloved to Allaah and which He has enjoined upon us.
