Anyone noticed how much useless information and junk there is on the roads, stuck on a steel pole, cemented into the footpaths? Why do we need all this rubbish and why is some company making a mint out of all this stuff which is nothing but a waste of council tax money. Why can't we just have tidy and clear footpaths and roads?

I entirely agree with you Cyrus - something that is becoming far to common given that we are natural enemies ;-)

If only we could go back and start again then perhaps we would have double yellow lines in places where we CAN park. What perplexes me the most is how every insignificant sign seems to need its own hulking great pillar - instead of a whole load being put on one.

Well, hate to out my past employers, but if there were not posted signs of possible violations by offenders, then there would be a basis for not guilty finding of many small charges. It is not possible for anyone to know all the ordinances and laws of any city/town. ( Aside from ignorance of the law is no excuse)

Now if a city can't fine people for violating ordinances because there were no signs to the contrary, where would the city coffers be?

Signs are costly. Typical stop sign costs about $75.00. One traffic stop would garner that much in fines although it is divided between State, city, county. Lets say 4 arrests pay for the sign. After that it is all profit until the sign has to be replaced. Yes, there is cost of the enforcement, but you are paying them to be out there anyhow.

Getting the drift? Money makes the economy go and pays for all kinds of enforcement. Pain in the a** but without this system it would be much worse.

What are you talking about exactly? You can not post things on city property for financial gain. Find out through your city ordinance codes what is impermissible and start your own sign abatement if you care so much. Don't just complain; do something.

I would suggest you take this matter up with your local city council. Good luck.
